Porn Star Paperback – March 15, 2016

Part of the fun of reading a co-written book is seeing whether the authors’ voices are distinct or blended. With this book, I didn’t know where one started and one stopped. They were able to create that magic where the characters were just Logan and Devi and there was no wondering where Sierra or Laurelin were in the process. That’s a gift, my friends.Should I start with the sex? Hell yes! The sex in this book is the hot-hotter-hottest-need-to-left-hand-it-right-freaking-now kind of sex. Was I surprised that these two would bring the heat? Not one little bit. The book is about actual porn stars; of course it needs to be hot. I had no idea it could be that erotic though. Damn.Logan O’Toole is the thoughtful type of male character that you dream about finding in real life but worry that could only exist in books. Who could possibly be this smart, this caring, this awakened, this feminist, this perfect ideal? He was introspective and oh so careful to make sure he was treating his partners with the utmost care. Sure, he had some bumps in the road and made some mistakes along the way but Logan O’Toole might be the best book boyfriend you could find. He’s so dreamy! I love him!And while Logan is this dreamy perfection, Devi Dare is a goddess. Oh Devi! She is brilliant, and kind, and gorgeous, and feminist, and sexy, and I loved the pieces we got to see of her Farsi background. I loved her views of porn and her desire to work in feminist environments and her ability to trust her instincts when in a dangerous situation. She made many brave and hard choices throughout the book, more so than Logan. For me, Devi was the real hero of the story.Logan and Devi work together to film a reality porn show but how much is real and how much is for show? What happens when feelings develop and you have to reconcile f-cking other people on camera while the person you love watches? The whole idea of an open relationship fascinates me. Is Devi ok with it? Is Logan? This is where the book really takes off for me. The feelings they have on the subject and the eventual outcome results in a thoughtful, beautiful, wild ride.I would be remiss not to applaud the authors for highlighting the problems that still exist in the porn industry. Since porn has become so mainstream, we think it’s a mythical happy place of positive sex but there’s still a murky underside. As we saw last year, sexism still runs rampant and women are put in dangerous situations. It’s important to pay attention to which companies we are watching.Finally, thank you so much to the authors for giving me a small part in being a porn-star! Logan O' Toole is at the height of his career as a porn star. He lives a good life by having a job that involves sex and keeps him in demand, he lives comfortably and he is well known. But after a recent breakup out of a long term relationship, Logan is reassessing his life. He's still happy with his career, but wonders if there might be more out there for him and if he's meant to have it. To my surprise, Logan is actually a very down-to-earth guy who has a sensitive streak. He's not an all out conceited jerk who struts around like he's the man of the hour.Devi Dare, on the other hand, is figuring out which direction to take her career next. She's not a big name star like Logan and likely needs to branch out more in order to gain additional opportunities. She's a fairly fresh face to the industry and has purposely limited her experiences to match her comfort zone, but she's definitely not someone who is shy or afraid of the camera.What I loved about Logan and Devi was how likable they both were. Neither of them had big egos or acted entitled and had to look at their jobs from a very logical point of view. They had a real and palpable chemistry between them and if you are curious as to how porn stars date and have relationships while keeping up with the job that they do and if having sex with others is conflicting, this book gives some insight to that. And it also examines that question in a philosophical manner, too. It's not a slam dunk answer because these aren't typical couples. On the other hand, they can be typical couples in other ways with regards to the emotions.Of course there are hot scenes, too, coupled with humor. Logan and Devi get involved in a reality-based tv project that follows them on actual dates. Trying to discern reality vs made-for-tv moments in the midst of a developing partnership also highlights how normal they are. Despite their flaws, I really enjoyed getting to know both Logan and Devi because they were so relatable. Great story overall.
