The importance of effective facility management in enabling organizations to function efficiently is widely recognized. The fourth edition of Total Facility Management offers a comprehensive treatment of what facility management means to owners, operators, tenants, facility managers and professional advisors, as well as containing advice on how facilities can be better managed from a number of perspectives. It consolidates current best practice, defines and develops emergent areas and offers a pathway for the future development of facility management. The facility management body of knowledge now benefits from the publication of several national and international standards, none of which were available when earlier editions of the book were published. The opportunity has been taken to modify the structure and content of this new edition to align it with these standards to provide readers and their organizations with a comprehensive treatment of the subject. Greater emphasis has been given to facility planning, especially the briefing stage in the design of a new or refurbished facility; design for operability; stakeholder management; outsourcing; procurement; transition; performance management; environmental management; sustainability; maintenance management; information management and building information modelling (BIM). Throughout the book, the links between facility management practice and the organisation’s business objectives are emphasised. Readers worldwide will find this fourth edition a valuable and thought-provoking blend of the principles and practice of facility management. Review: Five Stars - good Review: Received a book that was trampled on - I was excited to get this book. But on opening it, I saw it was not a new book or it was not well handled before packaging. I will return this because it does not look new at all. Also whoever packaged this disregarding the condition of the book must be very deceptive and wicked. I paid for a new book and can’t have this in my library.

Massive Manual
I retired 15 years ago from being a Chartered Surveyor engaged in management for many years, and I worked through the early evolution of what I knew as Facilities Management. This was a field developing from basic operations to underpin business needs in the most effective ways possible in procuring premises, controlling services, repairs and maintenance of buildings and surroundings etc. Facility Management, as it is now called, has become an internationally recognised discipline that is subject to continuous development, and it has widened to place emphasis on people using or affected by premises and infrastructure, on coordinating needs, on risk assessment, on increased responsibilities for safety, and on adding value to businesses and organisations. The publication ‘Total Facility Management’ is aimed at a worldwide market with provision of the most up-to-date comprehensive approaches and consolidation of best practices in an interdisciplinary manner, and it even presents indicators of future progress. Emphasis is placed on getting Facility Managers and other professional advisers to think globally yet act locally.in support of building owners, tenants and operators. This fourth edition, first published in 2000, now benefits from several national and international standards introduced over recent years, but there is a warning that users of ‘Total Facility Management’ must ascertain themselves the relevance of any legislation or other requirements. A Bibliography lists the most pertinent standards that will determine any framework for a facility management service. This may be out-sourced or in-house with the owner or user of premises, but in any case, and whether private or public sector, there must be a formal relationship with defined procedures for services formulation and implementation. To assist readers the book incorporates a list of Abbreviations, a Glossary and a Reference section, and there is a comprehensive Index. Also there are Appendices on Risks Involved in Outsourcing, Fraud and Irregularity, Contract Provisions, and a particularly useful checklist for a Service Level Agreement. After a brief Introduction the first main chapter sets the scene under the heading Fundamentals, and this will not fail to impress the value of facility management to non-practitioners and also to firmly set out and reinforce basics for practitioners, even though it is recognised there is no universal format. It is not practicable to refer to the detailed contents of ‘Total Facility Management’, but there then follows a further 14 major chapters with headings: Facility Planning, Facility Management Strategy, Human Resources Management, Workplace Productivity, Health, Safety and Security, The Outsourcing Decision, Procurement, Service Delivery, Specialist Services and Partnership, Performance Management, Maintenance Management, Sustainable Facilities, Change Management, and Information Management. Each of these chapters commences with a section Key Issues and terminates with sections on Conclusions, and Checklist. Under the 15 chapter headings there are sub-headings with readily identifiable subjects, and it is clear ‘Total Facility Management’ is a definitive and seminal publication. It is inevitable there is a degree of repetition in the text, but perhaps this is helpful to assist users to focus on particular areas of interest. I found the book heavy going and feel there may be benefit in dividing ‘Total Facility Management’ into a series of technical papers. This approach could assist updating in response to future changes or permit revisiting of accepted situations when new opportunities are recognized. As a massive manual ‘Total Facility Management’ deserves 5-stars for collecting together its huge volume of facility management issues, and identifying their demands for competence in practitioners, but because it is difficult to take in I deduct a star - hence 4-star rating.
