Omg this book was atrocious.
This story was a roller coaster of stupidity. It went from bad to worse and had the nerve to have an HEA. It started out with the MMC sexually assaulting the FMC after rescuing her from a sexual assault by a group of men. But the author made his sexual assault "okay" because it was in payment of his rescue of her. Are you kidding me?!?Another reviewer called this authors books rapey and I agree. The first five to seven books of her cyborg series are very r a p e fetish story lines. Which I hated. However, the later books are some of my favorite books by her. Her VGL series or her Zorn series don’t have this r a p e thing going on with her characters and so I like this author immensely because she is capable of writing worthy plots without the r a p e context. This story in particular had no basis for romance. The characters were unlikeable and only had s e x through the whole book as the sole premise of their relationship. The FMC kept claiming to love him after one day of s e x with the MMC but I could not for the life of me figure out what she loved. He was a d i c k with a capital D. He was literally only a walking p e n i s the entire story. They never got to know each other. He kept making horrible decisions when it came to his interactions with her to the point that I was disgusted at the mind games that were written into this couple’s dynamic. She was little better. She was supposedly raised knowing all about them but yet she knew next to nothing! And then as things were revealed to her she still kept making poor decisions that kept them at odds with each other. I honestly didn’t even get the impression that they even liked each. It came off like hate s e x most of the time, which was a huge turn off for me. And then the end just pissed me off! That HEA was straight bullsh!t!!Now the main thing that was the problem with this book was the paranormal world the author had set up. The werewolf's had sooo many clauses to how they functioned that it would absolutely have been impossible for this species to have survived their evolution. Granted, I may be over analyzing this but as I was reading this story all I could think about was that it made no sense for this were-world to not have been discovered and then eliminated by the regular world. It was absurd for their Heat to cause so many issues and then the last thing being that they go insane if they can't get laid! I can't roll my eyes enough on this plot premise. Lastly, I wish this author had put this amount of intimacy in her VGL Veso book. It would have been warranted in that book.Anyway, it was a horrible book with unappealing characters and I am not sure I want to read the other books in the series which I unfortunately bought together a few years ago. Good luck.

Good read
So I was first introduced to Laurann Dohner through the New Species series and absolutely loved every book! Since that series I've read the Zorn Warriors series and one book from her cyborg series. This has been my most recent read and I enjoyed it...however my favorite books are all still within the New Species and Zorn Warriors series. I had mixed feelings about Grady's and Mika's characters...I enjoyed them but then at the same time I would get frustrated with them. Overall, I still liked this book and it was a great read--still couldn't put it down! So, I liked this book and would recommend others to read it but I also highly, highly recommend others read the New Species and Zorn Warriors series . Those will always be my favorites!

5 stars = I freaking LOVED this book!!!
When the idea of theme months for the blog came up and we were asked if there were any shifter books we’d like to read, I immediately volunteered to read the Mating Heat series. It’s been far too long since I last read the first two books and I never got a chance to read book three once it was released. So this was the perfect opportunity for me to revisit old friends and within just a few pages, I found myself immersed into another of Dohner’s wonderful worlds. For me, Dohner consistently delivers fascinating characters, a good amount of action, and some seriously hot sex and Mate Set is no exception. As the first in the series set around the Alpha Pack headed by Elroy Harris, this installment wastes no time getting into the action as our first encounter with Mika is as she has been dragged into an alley by four drunk and randy werewolves. Fortunately for Mika, her uncle is a werewolf and an important member of the pack, so she knows how to deal with the local shifters. Unfortunately for Mika, these shifters aren’t local, it’s mating season, and they don’t care that she’s human and that their plans to use her to slake their mating heat will result in her death. When another shifter joins the party, Mika finds herself a rescuer instead of another attacker and flees only to be pursued by her rescuer who demands a little bit of sexy payment that serves to save her yet again when they part. When the two meet again the following day, their harmless encounter serves to ramp up the heat when her rescuer, Grady, is assigned to guard her during the mating season to protect her from being harmed or mated. What follows is a seriously sexy, sometimes humorous, and often frustrating read as Grady attempts to deny his mating instincts and accept what Mika is offering. Of course, when instinct takes over Mika soon finds herself wondering if her heart is going to come out unscathed once Grady’s mating heat passes.Mate Set definitely delivers on the sex and because we’re dealing with shifters in the midst of their mating season, the sex is hot, rough, and frequent – and I loved every bit of it. The connection between Mika and Grady occurs rather quickly due to Mika feeling a level of safety in Grady’s presence that she’s only experienced with her Uncle Omar. Once the reader meets Grady’s “stepmother” it becomes glaringly obvious as to why he has no interest in mating with a human, no matter how much he is drawn to Mika. This doesn’t make his actions toward her any less hurtful, but it makes them understandable. And his actions make Mika’s reactions VERY understandable because I would’ve headed straight to the airport too. Mika’s flight provides the perfect opportunity for the author to introduce Grady’s half-brothers and expand upon the reader’s introduction to the Alpha pack, thereby laying the foundation for the series. Of course, Dohner gives the couple (and the reader) a much deserved hot and happy ending that left me ready to reread His Purrfect Mate immediately.I reviewed my personal copy of the book.Reviewed by Angela at Crystal's Many Reviewers!

ok,but had some niggles with this one! 3 stars*
this is the first book in Laurann Dohner's 'Mating Heat' series. i have read some of her other books, though they can be hit and miss, have enjoyed quite a few of them.i did kind of like this book, though i did have some problems with it too. the story wasn't that bad at all, in fact there were some different takes on werewolf life that i found interesting. however, i think the problems lay in the characterization.unlike the other books i have read by this author, this one only tells the story through the heroine, rather than letting us see different characters perspectives, which in the case i think would have majorly helped to improve this book. as we do not get to see the male leads side of the story it is twice as hard to like him at all, even more so with the way he treated the heroine.he appeared to have a very violent nature and showed pretty much no tenderness, affection or even sympathy towards the her.consequently, it is hard and even nigh impossible to see why the heroine fell for the guy and took all that he dished out.there is a lot of sex in this book, which i am not at all adverse too (its erotic romance & published by Ellora's Cave so that's to be expected!),however i think there should have been more focus on the romantic aspect of the book rather than the number of sex scenes,or at least to make one or two of them to be more tender and loving encounters (i don't mind some rough loving in a book, but a bit of sweetness can be nice too!)overall, it was an ok read, though these books are expensive.i won't be running out to by the next book in the series ('His Purrfect Mate),maybe if there is a cheap copy out there i would give it a whirl, but it's not something i am desperate to do. 3 stars*

Got to Love a Wolf!
I enjoyed this book, its the first in the mating series. Mika is a human who is visiting her uncle who is a werewolf. She visits him every year but this year she seems to have visited during the mating season, which is a dangerous time for a human to be around male werewolfs. Her uncle decides to assign a guard to her to watch over her 24/7. Grady is a very strong werewolf male who has been trusted to look after Mika. Grady is a half breed whose his human mother abandoned him to his werewolf father, so he knows human women just aren't safe to fall in love with. The wolf within him wants Mika as his mate, but Grady will not give in. I really enjoyed the story and read it in one day as I couldn't put the book down. You only Mika's version and her emotion when reading the book so you never truely know how Grady is feeling. He can come across as a nasty to her and cold but you can tell he is very much fighting with his emotions. Its a great read, I really do enjoy books from this author.

Not bad at all!
I've read some of this authors other books and rather enjoyed them, so giving this a chance wasn't a difficult decision, but I wasn't sure what to expect.First of all, its a nice story, though I must admit the leading character was annoying at times (a girl with no self preservation does not get much respect in my books, but I suppose thats part of what makes the story in the end). There are alot of graphic sexual moments in this book... well... actually it felt like half the book was sex xD but at least none of it was entirely pointless, most of the time it had some sort of reason and fitted into the story. This was overall rather enjoyable though not the best book I've read by this author, I'll be buying the second of the series.

Book 1
Mika is human with a werewolf for an uncle. Two weeks every year Mika visits her uncle but this year Mika made the mistake of visiting during mating season . Her uncle warns her not to go out after dark as she won't be safe. Mika gets fed up of being cooped up and decides to go out when she comes across four werewolves who all want to have sex with her. Grady comes along and saves her not realising who she is until the next day.....I love reading Laurann's stories and enjoyed this first book but I really loved all her New Species books!

One of my favourite authors.
Another fantastic series from Laurann Dohner. I don't think she can write a bad book. I was gripped from start to finish. You either love or hate her characters since she makes them so real. Can't wait for the next in the series.
