The pieces are made of solid metal and have a satisfyingly heavy feel to them. Some pieces are quite intricate, so having a sturdy construction is important. There are some visible manufacturing defects, but you need to look closely to notice them. The aged look is a product of at least two coats of paint: a dark/black opaque color applied to groves, and a transparent coating covering everything else. This looks believable on most pieces, but could've been applied more carefully in some. This approach also has the downside of highlighting the aforementioned minor defects. If my order was just for the pieces, I'd give them a 4/5.The biggest disappointment is the quality of the board. I didn't pay close enough attention to the board in the photos, but, if you look closely, you might notice that the top pattern is but made of wood. Instead, it's a plastic sticker with a wooden texture, good onto a wooden board. In person, it looks very cheap, and there's no mistaking it for plastic, even at a distance. If you're looking to buy a good looking board, this is *not* it. For $100, this type of quality is not okay.I'm keeping the order because the pieces are pretty good. You can buy then separately from the same manufacturer. For the board, you should look at similar price ranges on a site like Etsy.

I bought this for my husband as a gift. He is an amazing Chess player and Teacher. The pieces are very beautiful and heavy with felt on the bottom of each piece so it doesn't scratch the board. The board is heavy and shiny. For the price, I'm very disappointed that it didn't come with anything for traveling. The pieces came in a cheap plastic sheet and there is no carrying case for the pieces or the board. For the amount I paid for it, I would assume it would come with a traveling case or something to store the board and pieces. Instead it came in the box it was delivered in with bubble wrap around it. If you plan on leaving the board set up then I would highly recommend this however if you plan on using it and have to transport it, I wouldn't recommend it because you would be carrying it on the Amazon box it was delivered in. Since my husband teaches Chess, he needs to take the board and pieces for transport and there was nothing in the description stating that it did not come with anything to use to store and travel with it. Other than that, it's a beautiful set!
