Not only is Andrzej Wajdas award-winning Man of Marble one of the most important films in the history of Polis cinema, it is also one of the most compelling attacks on government corruption ever made. It is a Citizen Kane-styled story where Wajda introduces us to a young woman in Krakow, Agnieszka, who is making her thesis film. She is looking behind the scenes at the life of a 1950s bricklayer, Birkut, who was briefly elevated to the status of a communist hero. She wants to know how his heroism was created and what became of him. She gets a hold of censored footage and interviews with the mans friends and ex-wife, and the filmmaker who made him a hero. A portrait of Birkut emerges as a man who believed in the socialist ideals, the workers revolution, and in building housing for all. However, the young filmmakers hard-driving style and the content of her film unnerve her supervisor, who thinks its getting too close to a political nerve. The film project is killed with the excuse she is over budget, but the young filmmaker pushes forward against all odds to finish her film.

Man of Marble
I bought this film for my daughter who was studying the Polish Solidarity movement at school. I watched it first and really enjoyed the film. It is long and sub-titled, but still well worth it. It had real vision interspersed within it, so you get a real sense of what is was like through this time. My daughter watched it also and she enjoyed it, though for her elements of it were a bit unreal. It is best to watch this first then Man of Steel as the 2 are linked and the flow is better if you watch them in order. A very moving tale about a naive mans journey to enlightement and despair about his country and the way they were manipulated.

Outstanding film by world-class director. Have seen it before and will see it again.
Great acting, great story and great directing by Wajda, who has been making top notch films since the 1950s that stand the test of time.Beautiful to watch and chilling to think about, this movie works on so many levels - historical, political, humanity and the quest of a young film maker to complete a documentary. Sounds like a lot to put into one movie, but Wajda accomplishes what he sets out to do.Be forewarned - there is not a single car chase, explosion, gun fight or computer generated graphics in the entire film.

Man of Marble
One of Wajda's most politically daring films, "Marble" was censored upon release, yet it resonates with the same animus for corruption that ultimately drove the Soviets from power. Agnieszka's difficulties with a wary producer and the reluctance of her interview subjects to speak on-camera parallel the story of an idealized worker, movingly depicted by Radziwilowicz, banished for challenging Party authority. Employing a "Citizen Kane"-like story structure, Wajda cleverly satirizes both the filmmaking impulse as well as government distortions of truth.

The system of Communism
Man of Marble is a great movie by Director Wajda (followed by Man of Iron). Nobody, like Wajda is able todeconstruct Communism so intellegent. It's not stupid propaganda. The movie shows what communistsbelieve(d) and why they can't realize why it's not working. We have a plan for the plan of the plan.

Extraordinarily clever film
At the heart is a biography of a hero-turned-villain (at least in the eyes of the Polish state). However, we are not presented with a biography, but rather with the account of a young filmmaker who is trying to shoot such a biography. This is intriguing in itself, but what makes this extra special is that Wajda was able to defy the strict censorship of the Polish state by constructing the film in this way.It makes for gripping viewing. There are two intertwined stories - (i) the biography itself and (ii) the attempt to film the biography. Each of the two is fascinating in itself.I am working my through a number of Wadja movies and this is the best so far.

Important Polish Movie
This is one of the most important Polish movies dealing with early socialism, epic, monumental and enthusiastic times, slowly devouring people, ideas and fervor and bringing disappointments, bitterness and tragedy, but also first seeds for rebirth of modern, present day Poland.
