Penn Elcom 3234LK 4 Space (4U) Steel Rack Drawer with Slam Latch & Keyed Lock, 15.25 Inch Deep

I bought two of these to mount in my OSP Cases 14U rack. The Penn-Elcom drawers are nearly 1/2 the price of the OSP ones of the same size, and are excellent quality at a reasonable price. I'm glad I took the chance and got these. They fit perfectly in the rack and operate very smoothly. The plastic latch is fine, but the opening could be a pinch wider since only two fingers fit into the narrow opening of the pull. A slight downward pressure is needed to open the latch, and this otherwise works fine. Two keys are provided for each drawer and the same key work on either drawer.However, there was one small glitch with one of the drawers. A screw that holds the drawer mechanism had broken off in transit. The head of the screw sheared off, and the drawer was flopping down on the front right side. I was able to easily fix it by replacing it with a similar screw and washer from my parts box. I used a Dremel tool to grind the head for clearance with the mechanism. Although this might be a major issue for some who are not handy, it was an easy fix. I didn't deduct any stars since upon careful inspection, this was the only flaw. I'm very pleased with the drawers and loaded them full of wires, parts and stuff. Even when fully loaded with approximately 25 lbs, the operation is smooth and there are no signs of warping or stress on the mechanisms, frames, or drawers.

The drawers are nice and heavy and fits in my rack perfectly. However the drawer can be a little hard to open. The handle needs to be pushed down to disengage the latch to open it, this requires you to position your hand in the overhand position. It's more natural for me to open the drawer in the underhand position. In addition, the drawer slide has a mechanism that prevents the drawers from sliding open when tilted, so it requires a bit of initial force to get over this indent. Other than this minor quip, the drawers work great for my application.

This was the best choice in a drawer. SPEND THE EXTRA MONEY !!! There were some other drawers on Amazon that were tempting, but after reading that they didn't open all the way, I looked elsewhere. The handle that LOCKS ITSELF, without using the keyed lock. Meaning when I have a whole bunch of them in a rack, they won't all open at the same time, especially during transport (happened before...) or if you are on an uneven surface.Do yourself a favor and go with THE BEST drawer that I've ever seen. I have multiple other brands and these are the absolute best ones. Thanks PENN ELCOM for making such an awesome product.

This fit perfectly in my rack and was exactly what I needed to store cables and pieces for my server cases. The bearing is not as smooth as I would expect and you have to pull on it to open it once the latch is depressed. I cannot deduct a star for that though because I almost rather have it that way.

It's sturdy and nice, but it has nothing to hang the back end onto if you want to place it in a cage where it's screwed into bars and not sitting on something. We wanted it about 5 inches from the bottom of a hanging cage, and even empty it was too heavy to only attach from the front. Same for the 2U & 3U units we ordered. We had to get R1206/4U Mounting racks to attach to the back of all of these. This requires bracing them to something while you make holes in the right spots in order to put nuts and bolts through them; this requires cobalt steel drill bits, some drilling oil, and drilling at a slow speed, which takes about 1-2 minutes a hole. Keep in mind that those little bolts Elecom has on the inside are impossible to find solo. So you'll have to find 8-32s that have a super small/flat head or risk the drawer scrapping. We wouldn't had ordered if we knew all this ahead of time.

Major complaint - This locking rack drawer is reasonably well made, features rugged construction and excellent value EXCEPT that it's really a 4U plus another 1/4" on top ... so, guess what? None of my blank filler panels will work above it.Minor complaint - Although the unit was very well-packed for shipping, one of the rack flanges was badly bent - my guess it was packed this way at the manufacturer. I was able to cover the finish with felt and use pliers to straighten this defect.If you don't mind an open 1U space above this unit - and the sealed, black-painted drawer top makes this a secure and reasonably finished looking option - the price of the Penn-Elcom 3234LK makes this somewhat more attractive

Product is well built, meaty construction. Rack holes line up nicely. Doesn't have holes in back if you're looking for that sort of thing for cables (I wasn't). My only gripe is that the opening mechanism is a bit persnickity in that you've got to yank on it pretty hard to get it open sometimes. All in all, a solid buy and I'd recommend.
