Q: would these hold a fake nail for a night out or would the nails be popping off fast and easily?

You should be easily able to get a night out with these. I use them to stick fake nails over my real nails to play guitar, and they stay on just fine, even though every note is like an attempt to pop them off. One thing to know, though, you absolutely need to clean your real nail with alcohol before sticking these and the fake nail to them. When I don't have/use any alcohol, the nails pop off in a few hours.

Q: Can this work on a toenail that's missing the nail? Will it stick to the skin? And then put a false nail on top?

I would say yes. Just clean skin with alcohol put an adhesive over skin and one one behind the press nail so you have doble the adhesion. Because the adhesive is very thin is not going to look bulky.
