G-Technology 0G03586 1TB G-DRIVE ev ATC Thunderbolt

I'm a G-Tech fan! Their drives are fast (at least the ones I buy), are built like tanks, and I've never had one fail (I've lost count but I know I have at least 40 of them that I use for work). This drive is a bit different in that it is actually a drive INSIDE a protective case. The drive itself slides into the case to make a connection. The drive itself also has a USB3 connection built into it, so you can use it with or without the protective case. The CASE is prewired with a permanently connected Thunderbolt cable that clips around the parameter of the case. This is really the only part of the design that worries me; what happens if the cable fails over time from use? I guess I'll just buy a new case if that happens. BTW, additional compatible G-Tech drives are easily purchased and can be swapped out from the protective case or simply used as stand alone drives (the drive itself has a USB3 connection; whereas the case offers a Thunderbolt cable - so you get the connectivity of both). I have not run speed tests on this drive but at 7200rpm I have to believe it should perform equally well as my other G-Tech drives. There are certainly cheaper drives on the market but, frankly, I won't trust my work and my data to a "bargain" drive. The advantage of this design over other manufacturers shock-protected drives is that you don't HAVE to use the somewhat bulky protective case all the time - just unlatch and slide the drive out and use it as a typical stand alone drive.

i had this product for less than 6 months and it refuses to work no wear or tear still brand new next time i decide to buy a good hard rive ill choose a different brand

Have used G-Technology drives for years including Firewire and USB drives. I've never had a problem with any of those drives. Decided to purchase the ATC with thunderbolt to use when I shoot video in rough environments. The USB3 drive comes out of the case when I shoot in normal situations. I like the fact that drives can be changed out in the case and the thunderbolt connector on the case makes the drive future proof as evidenced by the new MacBook pro's.

It's big, but I like it. Great protection, cord attached, thunderbolt fast.

I normally give one star when the product comes DOA. But the case was really cool. Just wish that it would have worked.Tried it on 3 different machines, one with firewire, two with USB.... Was dead as a doorknob.

I've owned a number of G-Technology drives and never had a problem until I bought this one. So far, in the 8 months or so that I've had it, it's corrupted itself three times, requiring me to recover its data, format it, and put the data back on. With a 1TB drive, you can imagine how exhausting and time consuming that can be. So, expect to have to buy another drive to keep a back up of this drive for when it no longer mounts, or buy software to recover all your data. Really disappointing. For so long, G-Technology drives were the best money could buy. I'd steer clear of this one if I were you.

Excellent external hard drive, very rugged and fast. On a scale of 1-10. I give it a 10

I paid a premium for this rugged drive and it never worked correctly. It made my Mac Pro run poorly , un-mounting and re-mounting constantly. Unusable.
