Restless Empire: China and the World Since 1750

Excellent history
A definite update to the pantheon of Chinese histories, with added analysis that is very clarifying. One important message is that the PRC, which advertises itself as the champion of anti-imperialism, has changed from itself as once being an empire and now, to handle the inclusion of Tibet, Xinjiang, and other non-Han territories, has become a "light" empire, but still an empire.Written a decade ago, the author subscribed to the notion that China over time would liberalize to get along better with the rest of the world. That opinion now seems dated.

intelligent, fast-paced and enjoyable
I just bought this today and have read Chapter 6 already. What a pleasure to read something so clear, intelligent, fast-paced and enjoyable. If you want something deep, but you're worried about getting stuck with a dry, academic and unappealing book - this is the one for you.

Valuable non-American perspective, very well-grounded
Terrific review of Chinese identity, the formative traumas over two centuries, clearly grounded in deep experience of dialogue and interaction with people in China over several decades. Fascinating facts throughout, many drawn from Asian sources, that are arranged fairly systematically, without falling into the trap of a miscellany. Highly worthwhile read, in view of this Mandarin-speaking diplomat after four years of my own efforts to engage the Middle Kingdom.

Indispensable
Great, balanced and relevant history. This is history that holds the key to the present. Interesting is the pattern of insularity and the attempt to reach out and connect with Western society or global society. A must read for anyone interested in China's role today

This is an editorial masquerading as a book
Westad has a point of view and he doesn't let the facts get in the way of his recitation. This book is a light-weight observation based on one man's opinion. It is not well researched. The author puts forward his opinion without the benefit of references or footnotes. There are far better books than this one, and I'd recommend you read another.

Starts a bit staid but finishes very well
Soon-to-be Yale professor Westad’s book begin as a rather unexceptional modern history of China, treading ground that’s been better addressed in other works, but it gains momentum as it goes, particularly when later fused with his work on the Soviet presence in China and closing with interesting anecdotes from his time as a teacher and his observations on modern culture and political economy.
