Direct replacement for OEM (including bolt pattern)
Bought as a replacement for MerCruiser part number 89-96158T to use as a slave starter solenoid on my starboard MerCruiser 350 mag MPI horizon in-board engine (5.7L). I had engine starting problems that I isolated to the solenoid. This one looked identical to the OEM and the bolt pattern matched up. I have been burned by bolt patterns not aligning in the past, so I was pleasantly surprised. Greased all the terminals with dielectric grease in bolted it on and the engine fired right up, the first time! And successive times afterwards. I only made this repair three days ago, so I have limited testing. I can't comment on the longevity of this part, but I can say it's a form fit and function match for the 89- 96158T. Unlike other reviewers I was not using this for trim tabs, but for engine starting. I didn't see any other reviews like this, so I thought I should add one. I'm buying another one shortly to have on hand because it's only a matter of time before the port engine solenoid goes up! And for $15 it's worth it to not be stranded.

Solenoid does what it is supposed to do
Everything worked and was well packaged. Even though only one solenoid had failed, I ordered two so that I would not have to take everything back apart when the second eventually failed. Both solenoids came with replacement nuts, as is common for that type of electronics. The stud threads all matched, but the nut wrench flats were all different sizes. Not a huge deal, just an inconvenience to find and get out twice as many metric wrenches. This is why I dropped one star.

Very easy to install, and works great.
I'm very happy with this. Not much to report. My mercruiser is 31 years old now. A year ago I had to replace two 30-year old relay switches on the trim motor, and that fixed the problem with the trim motor not functioning correctly. Two weeks ago the boat wouldn't start, and so I replaced the relay switch (same exact item as the trim motor switches) and that fixed the starting problem. These are well built and I've had no problems. Easy and cheap to fix yourself.

Just what I needed
Installed on a 2002 4.3L Mercruiser to fix starting problem. Exact fit for original and even came with nuts and washers. Bought 2 for the price of one OEM, so I can have a spare on the boat in case one of the 3 (1 starter & 2 trim) goes bad in the future.

Relay shown is not what was provided!
Purchased two of these relays to replace defective units on my 2001 Rinker boat's power-trim pump unit. My original relays were starting to have problems making contact and moving the lower unit, especially in the down position. First problem with the new relays, the mounting plates of the relays received are not the same as the one pictured. The new relays were flush mount and what is shown is a stepped down mount bracket. The bottom of the relay is rounded, so there has to be a recess in the mounting location or the mounting bracket must be stepped down for the rounded part to clear about 5/16". Now pressed for time to get my boat going again, I had to either exchange mounting plates or shim up the unit with washers. I chose to swap mounting brackets on each relay. This would certainly void the warranty, but it would be more secure than adding a bunch of washers or other spacers. I was very careful to open and close the four metal tabs holding the plastic relay on each unit to the bases. After successfully swapping mounting plates from the old relays and installing modified new units in my boat, the second problem occurred. Neither unit would apply power to the pump unit, up nor down. The relays would independently and appropriately click when control switch was activated in the respective up or down switch position, but the main terminals would not make any electrical contact to the pump terminals. After checking my wiring and performing some voltage checks, I removed the relay units and bench tested with another 12 volt battery and ohmmeter. Neither of the relay solenoids would pull the main contacts closed to make continuity between the main terminals. It was obvious when these relays were first received in the mail, the manufacturing quality was not as good as what I was replacing. I have electro-mechanical repair experience, and did not to the best of my knowledge damage in any way the new relays when changing mounting plates or installing. In the end, I purchased another two new units from the nearest Mercury dealer for only $4 more dollars each. My recommendations, if you decide to purchase this item, are to make sure a flush mounting plate will work before buying and bench test the relay before going through the effort of installing. Shame on me for not doing that first!

SOLVED: Intermittent trim issues
I was experiencing intermittent issues with my alpha drive trim motor. I checked the wiring and even replaced the trim hydraulic motor since I assumed it was dead spot because the issue was effecting both up and down. With the new trim motor installed and the issue persisting I finally realized it was the solenoids. After an easy install the trim has been functioning perfectly.
