Good product
Been a year and 8 months now. I still have it but I use a WD now because it's a little quieter. But I still use this drive and it stop works flawlessly, of course I don't use it each day anymore but it does still work. Now I'm thinking I may hook it up to my ps4 soon 5th month now, still no issues, it may have disconnected once i think but went right back. Still loads as fast as internal, i hardly use the internal for anything. I dont transfer stuff alot on it, but when i do my photosand videos i send them right to the drive and its very fast. I only currently have about 500gb on it but i just got a new cam and using lots of RAW files and my camcorder creates big files at 60fps so i needed this. I also should mention a few things again: 1 i formatted my drive before i transfered anything that way my pc can be more compatible per se. 2. It's only been hooked up to my one pc, if i wanna get something off another i use a flash drive between the two. 3. I dont move it, it sits on the floor where it's basically been since i got it, again i dust it and lift it to do that but that's it. Remember its a desktop external its not made to keep moving, get a portable for that. So it's been 4 months now and the only thing that has happened is it seemed to disconnect twice but reconnected immediately, although that could have just been my computer but doubt it. Other than that it's still working perfectly fine. I keep up with what others write just to look for any red flags. I should also note that I hardly ever move or touch this drive, i moved it twice to dust it and that was minimal, its been sitting in the same spot laid on its front for the whole time. My data still loads as fast if not faster than the internal drive and has no lag. Seems this drive is hit or miss with other users. I saw these drives at walmart as well but didnt see the 5tb. This is my first external and have nothing else to compare it to, so buy at your own risk I rated 5 because it's the first day. So I will explain as much as I can. First understand this device is as good as the device you connect it to. I use it for my pc, it's a great pc if you have a slow older pc it may not perform at its best. Alot of reviews complain the speed is slow but you have to format it so that your computer can format it to its settings, once I did that my speeds went to about 179mbps i transfered about 410gb in 20 min it flew by, also I used the 3.0 port which is 10 to es faster than 2.0. The drive doesnt have many vents, ut I laid it on its side with the bottom facing out so that it can breath, it only gets warm, hasnt gotten hot. Also I read some complaining about the cords, well my port is very tight so the cord stays in and I have the drive sitting by the power cord so I mever even had to unwrap that. Seagate claims to have a file online to turn off the LED light. As far as noise, it's low to me kinda like a light fan sound, it's relaxing, I like it, some don't. Other reviews clai ed once you format it to xbox u cant use anything else with it...unless of course you reformat it to whichever device you're trying to use. Now with ,y computer the device shuts down when ,y computer shuts down and it boots up right along with it. I also noticed after just leaving my computer idle for awhile the drive seemed to go into standby (indicated by the blue light going off) but i could still access the files on it and 2 sec later the light came back on. So next thing I did was I wanted to see if I could access the files as quickly as my internal drive, I had a bu ch of HD videos and pics...in case you are wondering I used a HP slimline desktop very great computer and fast. Anyway, I was able to open my video just as fast as when I use my internal, same with pics, it actually seemed like it may have been faster at times. Now i dont know if it's because the drive is that good or because my computer is fairly new but like i said its as good as the device you hook it to. I also want to note that contrary to another reviewer this device has not slowed down my pc whatsoever. I forgot to mention I have the 5tb model. Last thing I will say is, there was some reviews stating not to leave the drive running. Like i said it seems to spin down when not in use for awhile but i am ot 100% sure. Regardless hard drives are made to be used and running, my old crappy computer from 2009 i still have and i us3d to leave it running 24/7 for the better part of 6 years because i dont like restarting unless I have to and it still works. My current computer I also leave running 24/7 and no issues whatsoever. Lastly, understand this is a "desktop" expansion hard drive NOT a portable drive, meaning it's not meant to bounce around from place to place or even room to room in my opinion, desktops are stationary as should any desktop external drive connected to it. If you plan to switch between computers etc, should probably consider a portable drive. If you have any questions feel free to ask me. UPDATE: So it has now been a month and this thing is still running smoothly, I haven't moved it it has been on it's side the whole month, has handled transfers smoothly, spins up rather quickly, quiet for the most part and still very fast. I really think the bad reviews come from people who move it around alot, like I said it's a desktop external not a portable, so if you get this get it woth the intention of keeping it stationary as opposed to moble. If any questions, just ask

Great for Plex on an Apple iMac
I'm using the 5TB version of this drive to host all my movie files. I've owned these drives for about 7 months now, and went across the world with these in my carry on. It works great and I haven't had any issues yet. I'm using this on a 5k maxed out iMac with the Plex Media Server to stream content to any device on my home or remote networks. All I did was reformat this drive to Mac's Journaled formatting (via Disk Utility) and didn't want to install the NTFS driver as I'm all Apple here. I bought two drives and use one that is connected 24x7 to my Mac and use the other as a back up locked up in a fire proof safe when not in use. I've also turned off the "Put Hard Drives to Sleep" function so that it is always spinning (plex has an issue with sleeping hard drives). Transfer rates are good. I've transferred about 1700 movie files (over 2TBs of data) in about 5 hours going from my the 1st 5TB drive to the 2nd 5TB drive (completely blank) over USB 3. The only time transfer speeds suffer is when doing lots of deletes and transfers simultaneously (for example, swapping out a standard definition movie for a higher definition movie). For smaller transfers, it's quick. I can transfer a 2GB movie from my Apple's SSD to this in under 1 minute. When transferring lots of data, I have both hooked up to my computer's UPS just in case of power failure (which is common here in Korea). The footprint and texture of the drives are nice. I just have them standing on my desk and they take up little real estate. There is a slight hum that comes from the hard drive, which isn't too distracting. It uses a USB 3 cable and a separate power cable. There is a blue light that blinks at a constant rate when transferring data. It will be solid if the drive is on, but nothing is reading or writing. It turns off after about 5 minutes of no activity which you can disable in your computer's power saver settings. It takes about 10 to 15 seconds to spin up. I'm looking at purchasing two more drives as I'm running out of room, and might go for the 8TB of this same model to store my movies, and use the 5TBs to store all my seasons and shows. Remember to always have a back up strategy as these drives can fail without warning. Also, ensure you eject the drive from your computer (click the eject button in OS X's finder window) and let the drive spin down before moving. Overall, I would recommend these drives to anyone who needs to archive lots of data.

So Far So Good. 3 & 2 Years & Counting...
I just purchased my 3rd one. 1st one is over 3 years old. 2nd one is a little over 2 years now. Both are working without a problem so far. *knock on wood* Both are always connected and on. I do fair file transfers on both back and forth to internal HDDs. So I would say intermediate use. I knew from day one that these weren't intended to be a heavy use externals. A friend of mine informed me that these were designed more so for archiving and storage with occasional file retrieving purposes. And despite what information was available online at the time over 3 years ago, he told me these are 5400RPM range HDDs. (I used Crystal Disk Info not long ago and result is 5980 RPM). Some advertises as 7200 which is false information. Of course this information is not available anywhere on Seagate's website, manual, booklet, so no lawsuit can be filed. Seagate's playing safe. (The friend used to work for a law firm specializing in filing lawsuits pertaining to false and misleading advertising products. Simply, he buys products in question, "take it apart", research/diagnose/investigate and file report based on his research). Simply put, I pretty much knew what I was/is buying. I have to agree with someone else that mentioned about HDDs are hit or miss. Sometimes even with top name brands, you can end up with an issue. Even more so then those of lesser name branded. I must say I am very lucky to have this unit lasting so long compared to others. I am a die-hard WD. All my internals (5) are WD Blacks. But the 1st Seagate Expansion 5TB I purchased was on special sale for $90 at a different website. So I figured I try my luck. $90 for a 5TB external HDD. I thought that was an amazing deal. I had second thoughts after reading other's comments but having experienced with 2 units, I decided to push my luck even further. I will update if my luck ran out on this unit. :) UPDATE: 06/02/18 At the time of 3rd unit purchase, I began using a Sabrent 4-Port USB 3.0 Hub with Individual Power Switches and LEDs included 5V/2.5A power adapter (HB-UMP3) to use as an on/off switch for each unit. Very heavy usage on turning on and off each unit. Sometimes just leaving the units on at all times. So far, all 3 units running very smoothly. I am very fortunate to this day with my units.

Roomy, affordable and fast!
I'd give it 5 stars if it was performing at the very apex of USB 3.0 speeds, but almost no products actually do anyway. I also always hesitate to give a perfect score. lol I have large storage and backup needs for several of my businesses. I also have an IT background, so I don't suffer inferior tech products. These USB storage devices can be hit and miss. 4 years ago, every Seagate USB drive was a gamble and the drives inside often failed. It's not a matter of warranty or cost, as much as, how precious your data is. Seagate seems to have a good product line currently. Having used or installed over 30 plus of these very devices I am confident to recommend them. So what are my write speeds and what are realistic expectations? My write speeds, using benchmark tools and just my eyeball average 40 MB/s to 125 MB/s. Why such a large variance? There are many factors really, but the most common issue is file size. If the files are small...say under 500MB, you'll see faster transfer speeds but if they are larger...say 1.5GB or larger, you'll see slower speeds. This is normal. And yes, the Seagate Expansion drive speeds are right on PAR with other similar products. A transfer of 25.05GBs of data of 92 various sized files in 115 different folders took a total time of 11:03 minutes. Another factor is that the internal HD is a Seagate drive designed for NAS devices and backup type work. It is also a mechanical type drive and not an SSD. Ergo - these are NOT performance drives. These are drives you 'dump' data to and mostly forget about it until you need it. I see some reviews of people complaining about the performance because they are trying to run programs directly from them or have removed the drive from the external casing and installed it directly into their PCs. THIS IS NOT WHAT THESE ARE MEANT FOR! You will not get reliable performance if you do that. If you want that, buy a proper internal hard drive that will also give you a nice long warranty. This is just the expansion unit. There is no backup or imaging software that is including. That's fine because if you already have that stuff (which I do), you save money. The truth is, any hard drive manufacturer can have a bad run. WD, Samsung, Hitachi...they have all had their problems. It's not a perfect world. That's why you must have numerous and redundant backup systems if your data has any value to you. These units have proven to be reliable in my opinion. I do not hesitate to recommend them. Best of luck!

Fast, Cheap, and Quiet -- What's Not to Like?
I had completely given up on full-sized external hard drives. They are heavy, noisy, require a power supply connection, and generally are matched in storage size by their diminutive, ubiquitous 3.5" counterparts. So why the five-star review here? Well, sheerly out of desperation, I bought this because I needed a large storage drive for a relatively massive file transfer process I was about to undertake. Boy did this turn out well. Yes, it is still big. But it is surprisingly quiet, and actually looks good, with a beveled black case and integrated rubber feet. But more importantly, not only does this thing hold 8 (yes, you read that right, EIGHT) gigabytes of data, but it is fast, fast, fast. When I connect it to my laptop, I routinely get 160Mb/s transfer speeds, blowing away the standard USB 3.0 speed of about 100 Mb/s. I must say I was completely surprised. Is it because perhaps they have put in a 7,800 or even a 10,000 rpm drive in it? Or that perhaps an integrated SCSI interface? I don't know, because I haven't opened the case (and don't plan to). But the speed and quietness of this thing is amazing for a traditional mechanical drive. And when one considers the ridiculously low cost of the unit -- only $180 for eight gigabytes of space -- it hits all the right bells. Bought out of forced desperation, it is now a favorite drive of mine. Five stars. NOTE: A word of caution that applies to ALL storage, not just this device. When someone purchases a drive this size, it is usually for backup reasons (like it was for me). REMEMBER THAT A BACKUP IS ONLY A BACKUP IF YOU HAVE A *DUPLICATE* COPY OF THE DATA SOMEWHERE. So, if you copy your data from your computer to this drive, then delete that data off your computer, THAT IS NOT A BACKUP. It may be an "archive," but it is certainly not a backup. If the drive fails, you may lose your data. You have to DUPLICATE your data in TWO SEPARATE LOCATIONS to have a true backup. It's just worth reminding everyone of that because it is easy to forget.

Expansion for PS4
You were brought to this product because you are in search of a new extended storage. Well, the Seagate Expansion 5TB Desktop External Hard Drive is fast, mobile, durable, and very cost friendly. While the primary purpose of the expansion is to be used for desktop computers, I use mine for my PS4. After having just a few games downloaded on my PS4, my storage was already getting full. This is when I started to search for a new type of storage, and stumbled upon the Seagate expansion. A few aspects that can sway your decision when buying this product are, as stated earlier, speed, mobility, durability, and cost. 1. Speed is a very important aspect for external hard drives. I was surprised at how fast this product could transfer over games from my current hard drive. Depending on the speed of the Wi-Fi, it would take about 10 minutes to complete a transfer. For a comparison, if you have a baseline 65 mb/s internet speed, the average game would take you 30 minutes to download. 2. Most external hard drives are not easy to move around since they will most likely sit in once spot. The length, width, and height of the expansion are 7.1 x 4.7 x 1.5 inches. It also only weighs 2.1 pounds, where competitors usually weigh more. I move this product from my hometown house to my college house frequently and it is very easy to find space for it. 3. I do take very good care of products that I purchase, but I have dropped this product a few times. It did not skip a beat when I would start it back up and it ran as quick and as smooth as it had previously. 4. The cost is what makes this product so appealing. I bought it for $130 at the time, and have had it since the beginning of May 2017. You will find princes for 5TB extended storages ranging anywhere from $100 to $500. The price of the Seagate 5TB extended storage is very reasonable, especially for the quality of the product. If you are searching for a new extended storage for your PlayStation, or any system, I would highly recommend purchasing the Seagate Expansion. This product is Fast, mobile, durable and very cost efficient. It will be very tough to find a product as good as it on the market, with the same functions.

Worked great for 4 days
I'm in a state of somewhat disbelief as I write this review. It's currently Thursday, and I received this drive on Monday. In these 4 days, I transferred a bunch of movies and television off of my laptop drive (which was almost full) to this, so I could use it as the drive space on a media server. While it's my fault for not having another backup, I couldn't have expected this drive to fail after a mere 4 days of use The first red flag should have been when I plugged in the USB to the drive upon setting it up, and heard a disheartening crunch. The female USB connector is very loose and wiggles around. However, this didn't appear to affect the function, and I got all of my media onto it in surprisingly little time. The write speed of this disk is a nice ~150 Mbps. Four days later, and the drive won't turn on. The light on the drive itself is unlit, and it doesn't appear in my list of drives. I want my money back, but I also want all the media that I spent years collecting back, so I'm thinking of taking it to a specialist who can recover data. The shoddiness of this product is unbelievable, and I wish I had heeded the advice of all the other reviewers with similar stories. Please don't make the same mistake! Spend a little more to protect your data. ***UPDATE*** The issue was with the drive housing. As you can see in one of the video reviews on this product, this external hard drive is just a Seagate Barracuda hard drive in a plastic housing, with a circuit board that turns the SATA and power connections of a standard hard drive into A/C and USB connections for it to be used outside of a computer. I tore this housing apart to get to the drive itself and mounted it to my work PC. Thankfully, my computer read the drive, and all my data was still there. I ordered a new hard drive enclosure to keep this drive portable. This shows that the drive itself is OK, but the rest of the product is shockingly poor. Because many people out there won't want or know how to tear this apart to get to the usable drive, I'm keeping my one star review
