Works exactly as expected with no surprises.
This adapter allowed me to connect a modern M1 Max MacBook Pro (Sonoma 14.4.x) to an SSD removed from a 2012 MacBook Air that would not power on or charge. There were no surprises at all. I unscrewed the ends of the device with the included screw driver and installed the SSD in the sled connected with an Apple branded USB to USB-C adapter. It took a few attempts to reinstall the sled in the aluminum housing using the proper orientation but it wasn't overly difficult or limiting; just crudely designed (four screws on two aluminum plates with only a single correct installation orientation). There's no compelling reason to reinstall the SSD into the aluminum case for data recovery but mentioning it here for completeness in case you were inclined to use the SSD for more than a one-off recovery. After I connected the device to my MacBook Pro, I clicked allow on the confirmation prompt for a USB device, I was then greeted with a familiar password prompt as a I was using FileVault full disk encryption on the 2012 MacBook Air and macOS was attempting to auto mount the encrypted filesystem on the device. I could have copied files directly right off the drive but best practice for data recovery is to make a byte-for-byte copy of the data on the SSD to an image file (.dmg). I used GNU ddrescue installed via MacPorts/Homebrew and then mounted the image file and restored files directly from that.

Good quality and easy of use.
Highly recommend this product. Easily connected the 7+17 pin SSD from my non-working Mid 2012 MacBook Pro Retina (A1398) to this USB external case. After a nervous 15-20 seconds the SSD appeared on my new MacBook as an external drive! I was able to copy the data with no connection issues. So, very happy this worked since the compatibility chart only shows it working with the 2012 MacBook Air 7+17 pin SSD. As noted by others, the board with my SSD attached would not slide into the case because the SSD is a fraction wider than the case.

works with 2012 macbook air disk
I was able to recover data from a 2012 macbook air disk. My understanding is these disks use a connector size not used in any other Apple or other model laptop, so it's impressive that an adaptor is available. Thank you!

Great for data rescue but not long term use
The 7/17 connection worked perfectly for data retrieval, but it would not work to store the old hard drive permanently for external use. (Drive from MacBook Pro A1398.) While the pins and connections work great, the card would not slide back into the case with the hard drive connected. The case is solid but only good for storing the utensil! Since I'm a tech I already planned to use it and then reserve the tool for future use with another drive and the case makes a secure holder for the tool, but do not purchase this hoping to use your old drive externally long term.

Quality item and easy to use.
This allowed me to save all the data on my SSD after my MacBook Air had taken on water damage. Saved me a lot of money and more headaches. I highly recommend this item. Super easy to use even for those who are not very tech savvy

Wasn’t compatible with my 2013 MacBook Pro SSD - drive was too wide for the enclosure.
Pro: the guts were compatible for using the stock 2013 MacBook Pro SSD as an external.Con: drive was a millimeter too wide for the enclosure.Too bad. The technology is good. Design: not so good.

good purchase, but make sure this is for you
Extremely proprietary looking, very specific product so make sure this will fit the ssd hard drive you have on hand. When I put it together I worried that it wouldn't fit, my ssd connector didn't quite fill out the space available. But, lo and behold, once I plugged the usb into my new laptop the ssd hard drive appeared in finder. Connectivity was intermittent, the drive disappeared often and after only 15 or 20 seconds, probably due to the damage to my ssd drive. But during one of the longer connections I was able to extract the desired data off of my ssd drive.Overall a good purchase! For 30 bucks this was way cheaper than having a professional retrieve some important data from a dead laptop.
