Under The Silver Lake

Intertextuality at its best. Thomas Pynchon like paranoia filled with endless MacGuffins and red herrings. A Big Lebowski for schizophrenics. So much fun. You can see the amount of love and care that the crew put into every detail. Top notch production design, wonderfully screwy characters make the endless rabbit holes enjoyable. Future cult classic.

Ugh...why didn't I respect the one star reviews? The best thing about this movie was the preview! That's why I bought it--it looked like a good set up. I should have seen the red flag when I noticed this was two hours long. But I like Andrew Garfield, and I was curious... Trust me, this movie is terrible! The characters are 100% unlikeable, there's violence to animals and children in it too. And the whole thing is just too weird, and I usually like weird, but not THIS weird. Save you money. I wish I did!

What a strange, weird, wacky movie this is - - and what fun it is to watch !!! Andrew Garfield leads an excellent cast that clearly got into the oddball spirit of the material. The combination of moments of realism with moments of surrealism feels perfectly in balance, providing a most entertaining two-plus hours. There's everything from intellectual exploration, to philosophical musings, to sex and violence - - something for everyone, often coming at the most unexpected times. The movie is a delicious run-through of Hollywood styles of filmmaking. The score is pure 1950s Hitchcockian overkill and the plot incidentals are often hilarious. The resolution of the underlying mystery may disappoint some, but if one takes this film as the intended critique of the mores, shallowness, and artificiality of life in Hollywood LA, it makes its own kind of sense. For those tired of yet another comic book, horror, or romantic comedy outing, here's a place to try something creative and refreshing.

It was like mental torture watching this movie all the way to the end. Upon reaching 'the end' there is a sense of anger beyond a feeling of mere disappointment that one would get from watching a terrible movie. This is a movie for immature shallow malevolent grim hard-hearted hopeless confused directionless faithless empty half-human unhappy people. Charles Manson would have liked this movie as he would have been able to control anyone he observed that thought this movie was in any way good. Ridiculous pos.

Glad we still have cinematic rebels among us, shaking things up with their conviction of vision. The art form dies when the day comes that all filmmakers are united by fear of dislike.

What did I just watch, seriously.

I had higher hopea for this than Andrew Garfield and director David Robert Mitchell. It is aimless and absurd trash.I waited for this movie for 2 YEARS after I saw the trailer, knowing what Robert Mitchell had accomplished with "It Follows." I'm dreadfully disappointed and there's no silver lining to this movie. I'm a staunch supporter of indies as well as mysteries, and I can guarantee you the writing in this movie is pointless, unfunny, and at times grotesque. The answer to the mystery is flat out dumb, even in the world of creative license and make believe. Proceed at your own disappointment.

It was awful. Give me my money back. Couldn't watch it.

A good idea that quickly runs out of steam and goes nowhere. I'd go with Inherent Vice or The Big Lebowski for the same kind of story done much, much better.

Requested as a gift

I recieved two copies of this bluray. Both had faults. No issues with any other new discs. From what I managed to see, the film looked very interesting.

I bought two separate copies of this blu ray, and both times, the disc froze in roughly the same place during the film (around five mins apart). I would advise against purchasing this film because it is faulty.
