a good start.
this kit alone is a good step forward into truely and accureatly sharpened blades, but to truely excell, it should be purchased with the ultamate finishing hone. the ultimate hone makes the edge glimmer and the look it makes when used right reminds me of a hdd or cd disc surface. almost scary sharp at 15 degrees, but i think 19 is better for a pocket knife or edc fixed blade. the kit is rather large as i thought it was as small as my hand before purchase, but rather is about the same size as a netbook pc. that just means more surface to sharpen with, so i am not complaining! very nice kit as of yet. next one is the diamond set for me... then i'll have no reason not to sharpen my high-carbon-content steel kitchen knives, each to a razors edge. these hones would loose half a mm to every kitchen knife i sharpened on my 15pc butchers block. it is however a must have for a long camping caravan. only a few drops are needed to whet the stones, and that means this bottle should last almost as long as the stones if not used overzealously. also, the pins in the stone holders slide out to almost double the length they show upon arrival, and they must be colapsed all the way to fit back in the kit. i like that this kit comes with empty space enough for a new hone and a seration hone too. nice addition there. buy it if you have a edc knife, and both the blade and your wrist will thank you for it.

great for problem knives
Bought this because I only had the sharpener set with stones. I had one knife that was so hard to sharpen (steel TOO hard?) But after a few strokes with this yesterday to get the angle back to correct it sharpened right up.No problem anymore, that knife is now my sharpest.

Has Some Issues
First let me say that I agree with Richard Rubner that an additional finer hone is needed. I bought the Extra-Fine and he recommends the Ultimate. I generally use an 8000 grit water stone after the Extra Fine so the Ultimate isn't needed for my purposes.Second, I'll say that, with the additional hone, the Edgemate can put a great edge on your knives....or at least some of them.Neither of the other reviewers mentions this but, if you look at some of the knife-nut forums, you'll find a common complaint. Both the Gatco and Lansky systems seem unable to deal with some knife sizes at the lower angles. When you attempt that, the hones make contact with the beveled edge of the clamp instead of the knife.I have yet to find anyone who can provide a solution to this problem without extensive modification to the clamp. While this product may work for your combination of knife sizes and angles, there's a chance that it won't and you should be aware of this before purchasing. One more thing to consider. If you are going to be sharpening standard kitchen cutlery or blades made from steel like 440C, VG10 or other relatively soft steels, this kit is fine. However, if you have, or plan on purchasing, knives using ZDP189 or CMPS30V (for examples) do yourself a favor and pay the extra money for the version with diamond hones. With ceramic hones, you're going to be spending half the day trying to sharpen the harder steels.

Best bang for the buck!
I don't think you will find a better bang for your buck as far as sharpening system are concerned. It comes with several sharpening stones with different levels of coarseness and the system puts a perfectly consistent sharpening angle on the blade. You get 80% or 90% of the benefit at 10% to 20% of the cost of other sharpening systems.I owned one of these systems before, but it got lost in the shuffle of moving. I didn't hesitate buying it again and would recommend it to anyone. It will put an excellent edge on any blade from a pocket knife to professional cutlery. I use it on my Henkel knife set. The only thing it may not do so well is serrated knives.

Totally dissatisfied for sharpening fillet knives
I spent a lot of time trying to get a razor sharp edge on my fillet knives with this kit, all unsuccessfully. I followed the instructions to the letter. I even went on line and watched the mfr's videos to make sure I was doing it correctly. I went back and bought the Ultimate stone from the same mfr. to see if that helped. I never was able to achieve the razor sharp edge, one that will shave hair off your arm or slice a vertically held single sheet of paper into ribbons. Beyond that this holder is not capable of holding a thin, narrow fillet knive in its jaws. The holding surface available isn't sufficient to hold the knife and eventually the knife will pop loose while you are sharpening it, which can be rather dangerous. If you are trying to sharpen at a 19 degree or less the sharpening stone will hit the aluminum holder jaws as much as the knife blade. Frankly, I was able to get as good or better results from the Smith's CCKS 2-stage knife sharpener (also sold by Amazon) at a fraction of the cost and with minimal time and effort. Just 2-3 stokes through this little sharpener will put a decent edge on my fillet knives. Perhaps this Gatco sharpening system does a better job on larger hunting knives, but I was totally dissatisfied with the sharpening results and holder design on fillet knives. A razor sharp edge is probably best achieved by using a leather strop and abrasive compound.
