Is this size okay for 8 year old? What else do I need to get him, like amp, cables, etc??

This is a perfect guitar for an 8 year old. As far as beginner guitars go this one is one of the best I've come across. As far as amps and cables. Youd be good with going with a cheaper amp. A cheap beginner amp would be line 6. The spider 4 model is a good one. It certainly isn't top of the line but it lasts pretty well. The Cables are up to you. When i recieved the guitar it came with a cheap cable. I prefer live wire cables. The size is dependent on your preference. If you have a guitar center in your area the store near me offers live wire cables with a lifetime warranty included. So you can replace broken cables if you have to for free

Dose it come with amp or cord?

It does not include an amp cord, no case, no picks, and no strap. I purchased an Orange CR20L 8" amp, I highly recommend. It's small but mighty and definitely better quality than the beginner/bundled amps from Fender or Peavey. Guitar straps for beginners are reasonable ($6-25). I play for my own pleasure...so I bought a guitar stand instead of a case. Have fun jamming!

Does this guitar work with rock smith?

Lol I'm buying it for that reason to. Yes any guitar should plug in and work on rocksmith

Does this guitar come with a starter kit (amp and cable)

No it is just a guitar. If you want an all in one solution you should look into the Jumpstart, those are the packages. Try searching for the IJRG220Z
