Homestyles Bedford Black Pedestal Desk

Very pleased with this lovely writing desk. Made with composite wood, but pieces feel heavier than expected. It's a true, solid, flat black paint. No wood-grain pattern or texture. Assembly took a while, and my building partner and I mixed up a few of the screws, so be extra careful when reading instructions and identifying the components (especially the very small screws). Very please with the look. Plenty of surface and storage space. Feels sturdy.

PROS: Overall, I love this desk. It's got plenty of storage space for all my things. The top is big enough for my laptop, a second monitor, and my printer while not being overwhelming for my NYC apartment sized space. There is room under the desk that I was able to set my small paper shredder and still have plenty of room for my legs. It's a pretty desk and I think it looks more expensive than it is. CONS: It was very tough to put together. I was not in any kind of rush because I wanted to get it right so I'm not judging based on the number of hours because I was working slowly at it. I'm judging based on a couple of things that were just wrong about the desk. (1) First, in putting together one of the pedestal sides, the holes did not line up for one section and we really struggled to make it work. Thankfully my husband helped and we were able to eventually gently use a rubber mallet to knock it into place. In doing this, there's one spot where the wood started to split a little, but it's in a spot no one will see anyway. (2) When installing the file drawer, one side of the track is not at the right height so when I put the drawer onto the track the drawer was too high on one side and would not close. I ended up removing the track from the drawer itself and drilling new holes but it took several tries. I finally got it in place where the drawer could close but it's not totally straight so there's a slight gap on the top left of the drawer. After the struggle, I was over it and decided I could live with it and that since I chose a black desk, it's not going to be noticeable for most people beyond me and others who struggle with OCD. (3) When trying to get the drawer to close, I noticed that the finish of the desk nicks very easily. Since my desk is black, I was able to touch up with a sharpie, but be careful not to knock into it with too many things.

very difficult to assemble, make sure 2 people are available to carry boxes. very heavy. Very beautiful piece, all nice hardwood. great quality. I am not mechanically inclined and it was a NIGHTMARE putting it together, Instructions are well written, and a LIVE PERSON answers their toll free #. I like this desk so much, perhaps because I have sweat in it, I would NEVER part with it. Fits perfectly in my home office and I an very pleased! If you buy this you will not be disappointed. I am a picky person, and can find nothing I don't like. I should add that I broke a castor while assembling, I call the toll free # and told them I would pay to have that piece shipped. They refused my $$ and sent it to me overnight.

It’s hard to find a desk exactly like this one for less than than $1,200-$1,500 so I was very happy to find this one. It’s all wood and none of that composite stuff that is so common in online furniture. The drawers are nice and deep. I wanted a file drawer and this one has it. There’s plenty of storage space which is what I wanted. I love this desk. Assembly is tricky- it does have a lot of pieces, all of which are clearly marked. I knew I couldn’t assemble it myself so I asked my handyman if he could do it. He assembled it within two hours. He did praise the quality of the wood and was impressed at how well every piece was labeled, which made his job much easier to do. I definitely recommend this desk.

I had been wanting a new desk for a couple years now, but wanted to make sure that I got what I truly wanted. I was willing to pay more for something fully assembled but couldn't find what I wanted. This fit the bill as I wanted the desk to be black and hard wood with good storage. The desk was packaged well, came in two boxes and each peice was individually wrapped. Nothing was damaged. Assembly was long and tedious, I broke it up over 3 days. Instructions consisted of drawings, but were easy to follow. Biggest problem was the hardware, very cheaply made. I've never stripped so many screws in my life because the metal was so soft. I even broke several cam locks. Luckily it came with extras. The wood peices were heavy and solid. I had no problem with crooked drawers or anything. Everything fit together well. The finished desk looks very nice and solid. Its a little smaller than I would expect, but I don't have a big space. The side drawers have holes drilled for cords, if you want to store components in the side. I'd love to stick my printer in it, but the space is too small for it. I take one star off for the cheap hardware and the desk being a little small.

I really, really wanted to like this desk: It looked great online, it fit our narrow space with a good amount of storage, the pieces were heavy, the hardware was well-labelled, and the drawers went together easily. But the main desk panels aren't drilled right, so the cam screws don't fit into the cam locks. They were off by more than a centimeter on some pieces, which (as you know if you've put together as much flat-pack furniture as we have) is way too far to bend the screw to force it to fit and not quite far enough to drill new holes for the cam screw and cam lock. Also, drilling those holes so they match is a giant pain and this desk just wasn't worth it. If you're lucky enough to get a desk where all of the holes are drilled right, I'm sure it's a handsome piece of furniture. But do you really want to be on your floor crying and cursing because the factory couldn't be bothered to be consistent? I should have listened to the other 1-star reviews. I implore you not to buy this desk. Don't take the chance unless you have time and money and heartache to spare. (Also, one piece did come with a damaged corner, but it would have been hidden, so not a giant deal. But the dang thing just wouldn't fit together, so I can't give them a pass on it.)

Beautiful desk. Took weeks to assemble. Some parts were installed incorrectly at the factory. Worked around the problems. One desk drawer did not close...had to be sanded to fit. File drawer left slide came apart...replacement part was ordered. File drawer doesn't close completely...I will live with that. Lessons learned. Never order this item again.
