Small book with lots of information
Nifty little book. Really makes it possible to identify the trees out in the woods. Something I've been meaning to do for quite some time. Unless you "know", they all look like pine trees! This book helps to break them down.

Decent key
Decent key that I brought out with us while backpacking in the Eastern Sierra, it’s basic that anyone can learn to use. We brought along with us the Jepson manual and for fun I would key out the conifers using both this key and the Jepson, though the Jepson is more in depth with more information, I have to say this is a great key because it is light weight vs the Jepson that nearly weighed as much as our bear can filled with food.

Good, not great.
What info the book gave was very good, but I expected more details and more illustrations or photos. It was helpful, but not enough for me.

Easy to use but oriented to the Western Sierras
This is a very concise and easy to use book. However, like many Sierra Nevada natural history books and field guides it is more oriented and useful to the Western Sierra. If you spend most of your time in the Eastern Sierra it may be inadequate or misleading.
