Beautifully dirty. Stunning art by a talented Photographer.
I’ve been following Mike Brodie since his days of riding the rails with his SX-70 in tow. I can’t remember exactly how I discovered his work, but I was really into Polaroids in the early 2000s. I found his polaroids online and always looked forward to new posts from far away towns. His work made the life of a vagabond seem almost romantic. I found out a couple of years later he was actually from the city where I’ve lived my entire life. This book was full of the pictures I saw as he originally posted them online years ago. I’m so happy to have them available on my shelf.

A Pause Before Leaping
'Tones of Dirt and Bone' is an apt title for a book that frequently seduces with its palate. The ochres, cyans, and gentle bruised purples of the polaroid images soften and ennoble the people and places that Mike Brodie photographs. This new book from Twin Palms featuring Brodie’s early work serves as a pause before the precipitous leap onto the train of runaways featured in A Period of Juvenile Prosperity. The simple layout and 48 images of 'Tones' are more classical in their framing and in their subject matter, however the characters they portray are not. Brodie seems captivated by the people he encounters – children, adults, and those stuck somewhere inbetween. In these photos he seems to be developing the language he will use to tell their individual stories, with a gaze that is direct but expressed with empathy.

Good Follow-up
This is the second collection of Mike Brodie photographs published by Twin Palms but the material pre-dates the images in A Period of Juvenile Prosperity. The pictures are from 2004 to 2006 and were all shot on instant Polaroid film. All the images are square format and have a somewhat more muted and less sharp quality than the 35mm film used for the first book. This gives gives them a retro-vintage-nostalgic feel even though the photographs are less than ten years old. There's a nice selection of portraits and environmental shots that will appeal to you if you liked the first book. There are fifty color plates presented in a quality hardcover binding. If you liked the first book you will like this one. If you are new to Mike Brodie's photography I would suggest you start with A Period of Juvenile Prosperity. Recommended.

Insieme al suo capolavoro "A period of juvenile prosperity", è un capolavoro della fotografia moderna.
