I just took my new Explorer+ to the bottom of Grand Canyon(and back). I was impressed with how quickly the unit captured 3D satellite tracking. It seemed like less than a minute although I didnโt time it. Garmin has done a good job with the User interface with a simple and intuitive control pad and function interface from the Home menu. Battery life was excellent and could have been even better with improved battery management practices. I especially liked the Quick Reply and Shared Tracking functions, allowing quick communications using standard pre-written texts and allowing my daughter to track me on her iPhone during my entire trek, something she enjoyed doing. I would highly recommend the Explorer+

I replaced the Mini that I bought last year because it seemed to take a long time to connect to satellites and since I hunt by myself most of the time, I want to be able to send out an SOS if I need to immediately and not be second guessing if it has made contact with the satellites. I haven't used it yet but have it attached to my hunting vest, just waiting to go. Last year I used the month-by-month subscription package but this year I activated it for the whole year. It is about the same money when you figure in the yearly activation fee on the month-by-month package.

Died on me after lying in the closet for 2 years. Won't charge, won't start up. For a $400 product, it's a piece of you know what.

I also have a previous model which I use regularly. It's invaluable for reaching people when out of cell service areas. I bought this newer version for my husband's use. I highly recommend it.
