An extremely emotionally captivating story.
I had avoided for many years reading stories about the Nazi death camps, knowing it would make me very sad and cause me to anguish about what happened to those millions of people who suffered torture and the majority murdered by their captors. I'm now saddened, but know after reading this book I have a greater appreciation for what it means to be free and live a life without fear and oppression of a violent dictatorship.

compassionate man
I was impressed how Mr. Pogozhev seemed to always be so aware of the suffering around him. I am very thankful for getting the privilege of reading this book.

MUST READ TO AVOID A REPEAT
In 1933 Hitler too was just a failed clown. This is where such clowns will lead us if we don't stop them now.

A Must Read
Thrilling account of a very courageous and daring survivor of cruel prison experiences during World War II. Couldn't stop reading until the end

Excellent
I would have liked to hear about his life after as well. Well written, moves along smoothly. So sad the horrific things they endured.

Interesting and emotional
It was terrible to read of all the suffering at Auschwitz but also uplifting to know that the human spirit survives and conquers.

Great historical reference ...
Great historical reference to Soviet soldiers being held in concentration camps instead of prisoner of war camps. The crimes committed by German soldiers and their henchmen are well documented. Millions died at Auschwitz, including tens of thousands of Soviet soldiers.

It's a good one
It's a fairly easy read. There are places where you can't put it down. A good lesson in sociology and history.

An admiration of great courage
Like many ordinary humane people, I seek out the those areas of history which show great outputs of cruelty and abuse, along with loss of dignity experienced by the innocent and decent part of humanity. Nazism and Communism, as shown by Germany and her allies plus the USSR under Stalin and Beria, provide the most flagrant of such evil. Andrey Pogozhev provided an excellent account of his sufferings and other experiences in an "university" whose curriculum was finding the best way to torture and kill as many people as possible. I found his account well expressed, and would recommend it for anyone wanting an easy to read biography of a man who was made to study and endure the theory and practice of living in a hell. Schools should have such Holocaust personal experiences on their essential to read list.

Title is a misnomer
I'm not belittling at all the hell that this man went through. He survived what is probably the most horrific and disgusting episode of human history and his account of life inside Auschwitz paints a picture well enough to understand something of this. However, the escape is a tiny proportion of the book and his wanderings in the Carpathian Mountains only a couple of sentences of overview. Yet I'd hoped that this was the main focus as the title and summary suggests. It would be better titled 'Inside Auschwitz' or something similar. Don't buy this unless you want a graphic account of the atrocities which were committed inside that camp.

Great book
Very accurate account of what happened in such a horrifying place. The book has a significant importance to myself, as my grandfather was the doctor who saved Andreys life.

Interesting but not gripping read
An interesting first hand account of one man's escape from hell. In fact he had several escapes, through a mixture of luck, courage and intelligence. At times the writing didn't seem to flow well, which may be because the author is not a professional writer and presumably the book is translated. Also, he goes into a lot of detail about some things in the camp, but then glosses over things at the end (subsequent escapes and the trial) which I believe needed more detail. The book is more about Auschwitz concentration camp life than escape, but its interesting and authentic.
