Don't need it for the job.
Did my second timing belt on my '05 EJ20 engine and didn't use this the first time but just two hex keys with a breaker bar and a large socket to hold the cams. Thought I would try this for my second time around and it was useful for holding the cams overnight but when installing the new belt went back to the hex keys and socket method as that allows you to ever so slightly move the cams to fit the belt so it's actually easier doing it without the tool. So it's main use for me was holding the cams overnight - though without the tool you can just let the cams spin their quarter turn and turn them back the correct way.

Convenient for EJ DOHC engines
The tool might be a bit pricey, but it does wonders for an individual subaru EJ engine builder. The magnets in the middle of the 10mm Allen bit keeps the tool in place while you twist the cam and tighten the nut.

Critical tool for timing on Subaru with dohc
In the past I used a vise grip clamped to the cam sprockets of my 2013 wrx to keep them from moving. It worked the first time but most recently the sprockets didn’t stay in alignment when I released the clamp. Trying to re-align them and keep the cams in place, while slipping a belt around it with less than 5 hands and without a monks patience is impossible. With this tool within 3 minutes I got the cam lock on, and timing marks all aligned. Didn’t take much force on the outer head to get them to lock. If you’re thinking to tackle timing, save yourself the grey hairs and get this to do the job right.

Makes timing belt changes so much easier
Just did a timing belt on my 2009 Subaru wrx with this tool. The tool was a little tight getting in place on the cams, I tapped it with a mallet to seat it. Other than that it made the job soo much easier, you can make adjustments to the drivers side cams and you don’t have to worry about the cams spinning out of time. Just make sure the bottom exhaust cam adjustment is real tight, mine walked out of time one tooth.

Not perfect, but useful
I've read of other techniques for locking the cams on the subaru DOHC engine during timing belt replacement... Locking pliers to hold the cams together, a bolt wedged between them to hold them in place... But I wasn't comfortable risking damage to the pulleys so I went with the camlock tool. I found that the pulleys moved about half a tooth while using the tool, which wasn't a huge deal; just had to be careful to return them to their original position as the belt was installed. It's not perfect, but I'm glad I used it.

Nice tool
Seems to work okay. Just make sure it is snugged down tight or the cams with valve spring tension will still spin. Makes it much easier for one person than to have to use vice grips or a special bolt in between the cams so they will stay put.

Must use tool for DOHC timing belt change.
Worked exactly as advertised locking both exhaust and intake cams during a timing belt change. I was able to loosen one side at a time to adjust the cam marks without it freely spinning as it allows for a 19mm wrench to turn cam/hex magnet and then can lock it back down while holding 19mm wrench in place and snug down the end bolt with a 17mm socket.
