The Best Anti-War Film Ever Made!
A very harrowing look at the brutalities of which the Nazis and there collaborators did to the peasant population of Eastern Europe during World War 2. A very surreal picture that is almost a nightmare acted out. The information revealed later on as to the making of this film clearly shows how much the director and film crew strove for authenticity regarding the type of images seen here. Of course, it's not a documentary, but as close to one as anyone could get from a dramatized picture. There are scenes in this movie that will haunt everyone familiar with the true incidents of that time and place in history. Any true WW2 buff should see this film. It is as close to realistic as any fictional war film that I have every seen -- and I've seen over 80 war films.Certainly one of the most anti-war films ever made, seen through the eyes of those who most suffer from war: the civilians!P.S. Post War Soviet propaganda and atrocities are irrelevant here; this film is precisely about the events that transpired while Russia was an Allie in the war, not a later enemy to be hated. Try to concentrate of the fact that MILLIONS of human beings -- including children -- suffered and died surrounding the events depicted in this motion picture.

A bottom-up perspective on the meaning of total war.
Flawless Soviet film-making minus any propaganda inputs from the Kremlin. None of the usual heroes in it. Just normal people. People proving that aggressors (in this case the Nazis) who care nothing about the hearts and minds of the citizens they are persecuting may win many cosmetic victories in the short run but will lose the peace for their nation in the long run and beggar it politically, strategically and morally for years to come. Not that those who drive their nation into war, and produce so many failed states in their wake, will lose much sleep over that, of course. Didn't then and don't now. Which makes the title of this film so meaningful for those who learn about war from newspapers, books and the stories (apt word that) they get in the news.

WWII movie I had to have in my collection.
This unique soviet era (1985) war movie was very realistic according to eye witness of the events at the time. It follows the events that happen to a young boy in Belarus behind the front lines. His family is murdered by German Waffen SS special action groups. I first watched this movie back in 1987 and was very impressed!

Difficult to Watch, But Worth It
This is a hard film to get through, but illustrates what World War II on the Eastern Front was really like for the common people. It gives you an idea of what the Ukrainians are enduring right now.

Shocking and tragic
I saw this movie several years ago. It was very powerful and made a lasting impression on me. I read, this movie may have been based on SS commander Oskar Dirlewanger and his rogue SS unit. This should be required viewing for college modern history students. It is much too strong and violent of younger viewers.

Worst anti-war film ever made!
After all the hype about COME AND SEE being the best, I purchased a copy and feel totally conned! The acting was very poor with the main character being confused and lost throughout the compete movie. The main climax section where the Germans raid a village and burn the villagers alive in a church is extremely poorly done. The director made the SS German unit out to be an uncontrolled mob--when in fact the SS was a very disciplined unit that carried out its horrible missions with extreme efficiency--which made the acts so horrible and inhumane. The make-up on the boy's face at the end of the movies was very amateurish and failed to make the boy look aged through experiencing years of horror. Numerous times during the movie the director would make huge "jumps" leaving me scrambling as to what happened. The thought process was obviously based on Russian history where a lot did not have to be explained to the Russian viewer and yet the REAL suffering of the Russian people was skipped over; starvation, mass executions f commissars/communists and the burnt earth system with the total elimination of the Eninstazgruppen. I ahve watched many Russian WWII movies and would rate this movie as the WORST of the lot.

also is a good antidote to the constant pushing of a "Jews" only ...
A powerhouse of ww2 film making, this film tells about the Belorussian genocide first hand through the eyes of children, always the first to suffer in wars, also is a good antidote to the constant pushing of a "Jews" only holocaust, the holocaust was not just Jews as modern media wants people to think but Belorussians, Russians, Slavs, Poles, the mentally ill, intellectuals, Christians, and Germans.

good buy for the price
the movie was excellent. best war movie i have ever seen by far. this dvd is pretty nice as well...my only complaint is that the movie is on both discs so you do have to change out discs roughly halfway through...but at least this version is still in print and the audio and film quality were fine. several extras are also included.

One of the greatest war movie if the THE greatest.
This movie is on another level. It's a war movie and yet, I felt uncomfortable because it was so realistic and it felt almost like a horror movie. I'm really happy to have the DVD in my collection. I strongly recommend to watch it.

the most honest war film
I had never heard of Klimov before this film, he is an extraordinary director, rigorous and disciplined, the film is terrifying in its portrayal of the war on the eastern front.
