Living Thelema: A Practical Guide to Attainment in Aleister Crowley's System of Magick

David Shoemaker's Living Thelema is a very good book, particularly for those interested in Crowley's writings especially as they concern the Knowledge and Conversation of One's Holy Guardian Angel. The book is clear, well written and to the point. We admit that our own education in Jungian Psychology, which the author uses to illuminate many of Crowley's ideas, helped quite a bit, but a background in psychology is not necessary for understanding this work. The author explains all the Jungian concepts thoroughly and while we have read a great deal of Crowley's writings previously, this book gave us even greater insight into his philosophy. 93 93/93Dr.Shoemaker has produced the most brilliant work on the Thelemic path so far. What he has done is to strip away all the details which one does not need to know at an early level,(of course these more advanced details are available in Crowley's source works and online). He has made somewhat clearer the path to attainment. After reading and meditating on this book I have re-assessed the way I do my work and after only 3 weeks I feel the rewards, i am a sole practitioner. Quite literally I was doing rituals which I needed not be doing as yet, which was somewhat overworking my psyche. I feel clearer and fresher in the ones I am doing according to Dr.Shoemakers instructions. Of course he makes clear that if you are of a higher grade to which I am, not to change your regimen without talking to your superior. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in attainment in Aleister Crowleys system. Considering the author is a practicing Clinical Psycologist the wording is very easy to fathom. He could have blinded our senses with science, but that was obviously not his intention. Grab yourself a copy, I am sure you won't be disappointment ! We need more balanced Thelemites out there to carry the flame which "burns in every heart of man, and in the core of every star". Yes, that is each and every one of you,(who is called). An extremely admirable work! I might finish by saying that there are no rituals(there is a sample), but there are several very useful exercises throughout, which I am sure you will find interesting and educational. Absolutely amazing insight by a fascinating mind. Dr. David Shoemaker is a very cordial person who will coraspond with you. His podcast is also great. He has a very pragmatic perception and a very easily comprehensive method of conveying his knowledge.

I had struggled for several months trying to grasp he basics of Thelema and how to go about it in a more practical sense but it really didn't come together until I started reading this book. Definetly would recommend to anyone trying to understand more about the Thelemic path.

I found this book very helpful, so thank you very much to the Author. I also appreciate that it’s available in kindle format, because I was able to take it anywhere and read/review it anytime.

Creo que es un buen libro para explicar lo que es Thelema, la AA, y la O.T.O. Ademas de que tiene información general sobre esoterismo y ocultismo. Me dio la impresión que el autor trato de condensar demasiada información en unas pocas paginas, lo que provoca que la teoria y los ejercicios dejen bastante que desear en temas muy importantes de Thelema y A.C.Prefiero la escuela e interpretación de Daniel Gunther sobre Thelema.

Ich suchte nach einem Buch, welches mir den bislang unverstandenen Begriff Thelema des Crowleyschen Ansatzes erläutert. Tatsächlich waren einige Kapitel sehr erhellen - gerade bei der Suche nach dem eigenen "wahren Willen".Es muss aber ergänzt werden, dass trotz des Titels Thelema selbst ein Nebenaspekt des Buches darstellt. Der Autor erwähnt im Vorwort er wolle nur Hilfestellungen für Praktiker auf dem Weg des Großen Werkes geben. Das geht mit einem weiten, unsystematischen Aufbau einher, der Magie aus psychologischer Sicht, Yoga-Atmung, Thelema und vieles mehr in jeweils kurzen Aufsätzen erläutert. Diese sind eher eine Hilfestellung bei der täglichen Übung als selbst eine Anleitung oder eigentliche Erläuterung.Dennoch insgesamt gutes und hilfreiches Werk.

Most of the stuffs were from the 'speech in silence' channel in youtube, but the author has some good remarks on parasitical aspect of magic and good explanation of tree of life in general. However it was quite general and not specific, I would like the author to write book specifically on topic such as ritual and personal remark and inspirtation

Really enjoyed the book - read it thoroughly. Really enjoyed the AA and especially the information on grades. But it has a very annoying self-help tone to it, which makes reading it boring sometimes.

Got a bit bent out of shape in transport but nothing substantially damaging. Otherwise, a great book.
