The Baltimore Rowhouse Paperback – February 1, 2001

This wonderful history of Baltimore's iconic architecture, the rowhouse, was so helpful to me wbegan my career as a city. If you are as fond of rowhouses as I am, you will enjoy this book.

Baltimore is, perhaps, one of the most overlooked cities in the United States when it comes to architectural heritage. This book helps to overcome that problem. The history of rowhouse construction in the United States is generally overlooked, leaving Baltimore very much outside of general architectural histories as Baltimore was (and should forever be) the epicenter of rowhouse construction in the United States. The book has an excellent text treating the topic in chronological order, with excellent illustration and anecdotal material drawn from the vast research that went into writing the book. Mr. Belfoure has done a great service not only for Baltimore or for rowhouse architecture, but for any and all who desire a well-rounded understanding of these topics.

Very well researched and some great photos. A great read for those interested in Baltimore's architecture and history!

This was a well researched architectural survey of the evolution of the unique Baltimore rowhouse. It also included details about economics and social history , which were interesting and helpful. It was well done, readable,and included various photos as examples. I would have enjoyed seeing more photos and maps designating areas of the city where the row houses were located. It gave me a good overview for personal exploration when I visited this interesting city.

this could be a bit dry for someone who wasn't a history major or otherwise happy with traditional history writing. But those with patience for a little bit of dry writing will uncover an incredible amount of fascinating information about Baltimore and architecture. I was actually interested in finding a book about New York brownstones, and found this book instead. I do not regret it. When you consider how much had to go into producing this volume, it should be honored.

I was very excited to find this book, great details and images. I was able to date many of the houses I've lived in as well as friends houses. A wonderful historical document

I purchased this book for my brother who moved from Baltimore many years ago and he simply enjoyed looking at this book and reminiscing about his own childhood here in Baltimore.

I feel like I've learned so much about my adopted city. We're currently in the process of buying a pre-1869 rowhouse and this book was fascinating. Now I can identify lots of different architectural styles in the city.
