Good gear
I have been using a standard 1qt USGI canteen and cup setup for quite some time now. The draw back of the plastic canteen is you can boil water in it. You have to boil in the cup and fill the canteen with the boiled water. So I finally Bought myself one of these. The canteen is great! The Molle 2 cover is nice, heavy canvas way better than the old veitnam era style cover. You can put a lot of kit in this cover. Nice molle straps sewin right on, so you can slip on to your belt without having to get anything special. Use a piece of cordage to make a shoulder strap and have a nice carry for a quick hike or scout. Has 2 good sized pouches on the front for some extra gear. The cup, well its a little bigger than the regular GI, but the butterfly handles are pretty small. I don't have large hands by any means, and its small for me. I couldn't imagine trying to cook with that cup. I would recommend getting a better cup. It is well made except for the tiny handles. I may just cut it up and make a stove out of it. So for the price is it worth it? If you look around I doubt you can find a Stainless Steel bottle/canteen at 44oz for less than 40bucks. The cover, oh I see them around in the 15-20 dollar range online, and in the surplus shops. The cup? Well its big, fits about 1qt, but them handles are painfully tiny. How ever, with a little time, a dremel and a drill you could make it into a nesting stove. So for $50 shipped I think its worth it. I would suggest ordering a separate cup at the same time. Either the under folding handle WW2 style or my fave the newer butterfly style. Rothco offers the butterfly in Stainless for $10, and its quality. You could also check out the canteen shop or the pathfinder kit. I went this way because of the shipping, and I don't mind making myself a stove from the cup

Overall pleased but......
Overall I like this kit (minus the saw pouch, which is worthless but free). The only complaint I have is the canteen gives water a funny taste. I have washed and washed and even scrubbed it out with a toothbrush and it still leaves a faint taste to the water. Not as bad as when I first received it, but it is still enough to make it an issue. Would I buy it again? Yeah, I guess so. It's a good alternative to the pathfinder version and this one actually has an attached cap (helps prevent loss) that can be removed if you wish to use the canteen to boil water. It seems fairly well made, but no where near military surplus standards. I have had several Usgi canteen cups and this kit could never match them in durability. But does it need to? I only go out fairly close to home and 95 percent of the time it is on day trips so my life doesn't depend on this kit. If you want to find a good pouch for it, just check out YouTube for whatever people are using with the pathfinder version as they are identical in size. Only difference is the handles and I prefer the butterfly handles over the folding L shaped ones. Personal preference.

The smell is from the cap gasket
I'm sensitive to plastic tasting water and have been searching for a stainless steel canteen. This is a stand-out because of the extra size. I love that. Big mouth to drop in ice if desired. Great product. There is a small downside. Not sure how critical it is. I heard that these needed to be washed out well before use. So I spend a lot of time with soap/water. Everytime I uncapped the canteen, there was a chemical smell. I worked on cleaning it out for a week and it always had that smell. But then, I had a hunch. Instead of capping it, I covered the canteen opening with something else rather than the cap. After a few days I stuck my nose down in there and it was fine. The white rubber used in the cap is what causes the smell. So when I use the cap, after I open it, I blow the air out and take a whiff and there is no smell whatsoever. Verified, the rubber is the issue and creates a smell in the trapped air. I'm not sure how much of a problem it is. Everytime I go to take a swig, I just blow the air out that's in there and there and it's fine. It also doesn't alter the taste of the water.

The sides are strait not tapered like the G
It's well made. I did a little research and found out they're made on China. Not really surprised though. The cap has rubber in it that sometimes develops a slime in its surface. I covered it with tin foil to solve the problem. It's larger than a standard military canteen. The sides are strait not tapered like the G.I. ones. This means that only the nesting cup it comes with will fit on it. The handles on the cup are small and can get pretty hot when put over a fire. I use a pot holder when I cook with it. The biggest issue is its weight. Filled with water it's pretty heavy. I often carry it on my belt and it can get pretty annoying when hiking all day. Dispite all the cons I listed I still like it. It's a steel canteen at a good price and will serve well until I can afford a $100 titanium canteen

Solid Product! Should last forever
Solid Product! Should last forever. I also bought the lid that fits the cup...it should be included in this kit. The bag is way too big and obviously not made for this canteen. I found a canvas bag that works better. I also modified the product by adding a stainless steel wire bail so I could hang over a fire to heat water. With a few utensils added this can be used as a complete cooking kit for backpacking, the only other pot/pan I have for cooking is a small alum frying pan. It's nice to be able to heat water in a canteen that also stores water, then drink or eat from the cup that nests so nicely with the canteen.

Great if you're looking for a military canteen
It very good. The canteen is sturdy and the ca is as well. Mine came with a complemetary army surplus pack that very rugged and attractive. My only complaint is that There is a chain that attaches the cap to the body that wasn't welded on very well and came off recently after buying it and the cup is slid on to the bottom off the canteen and you fill the with very cold water, the condensation leaves the inside of the cup wet for long periods of time after the water returns to room tempature and could theoretically develop mold. Over all very good product with nothing wrong with the specific product but with specific concept.

The plastic cap is a no deal
Good canteen. I used it camping, hiking, even daily use.. the only issue I have is the cap is plastic. An awful idea... My cap cracked from a tip over... keep that in mind! I looked for replacement caps but no luck. I'm just going to use it to store rice for camping ;P
