Wish I upgraded earlier!
I just replaced my 2 year old Synology RS814 with this RS815+ and am blown away by the performance of this unit. My old RS814 supported a bandwidth hungry family of 4, handful of security cameras, and many other services without an issue, I simply wanted more power and performance and boy does the RS815+ deliver! When I transcode video, transfer files, etc the processor is barely effected, same with the RAM. This unit uses near about the same power that my old server used and is just as quiet. Synology actually added a few air baffles to the sides of the network card to aid with better cooling, a nice "cool" touch. I haven't even scratched the surface of what this new unit can do but I can tell you that it's leaps and bounds above older models.I'm currently running 3 WD Red 2TB hard drives set up in RAID 5. I must note that the performance of RAID 5 is satisfactory with reads and writes. The RAID 5 is fast ( I uploaded 50gb of music locally via Ethernet from my laptop to the server and it only took about 10 minutes), but I'll likely add an additional hard drive and switch to RAID 10. And yes, I know RAID is not a backup method and the fastest setup is JBOD with an external backup :)

Rock solid, Synology never fails to deliver.
Wonderful product, their rack rails for the RS815+ are satisfyingly engineered too. I put 4 8 TB Iron Wolf NAS drives in this one (SHR), for plenty of space for home.Synology has a dizzying array of applications compatible with their OS that brings the value of ownership up by a factor or two, Plex, for example, is one that is very handy to have baked right into the NAS.I'll not go into all the performance metrics/benchmarks as there are a lot of fine write-ups already available. I did aggregate the four ports with my Cisco switch, so its throughput is much greater than my needs will ever reach.Synology brings so much to the table, it makes the idea of not having a home NAS seem a foreign concept, from darker times.

Works perfectly with 4x 4Gb Toshiba NAS rated drives. ...
Works perfectly with 4x 4Gb Toshiba NAS rated drives.I'm using it for Plex, backups, Surveillance Station with 4 cameras, downloads, etc in the small server rack at home and it has been flawless so far.Mt serial number is after the Intel C2000 CPU bug (the serial starts with 172), so here's hoping it has the fix applied...

Great NAS Device for Home
After researching many NAS units for home use I settled on the Synology RS815+, and am glad I did. I worked for a large Enterprise Storage company for many years so have a good background (semi-technical) in storage. I was apprehensive spending this much for a storage unit, but when comparing prices and features this unit seemed like a great value, plus the rack-mountability is a nice perk for a remodel/home networking/surveillance/command center. This model is probably overkill for a home, but it performs so well I don't regret it for a second. The Synology was easy to set up and configure. Enabling TimeMachine to backup several Macs running Mavericks and Yosemite (now el Capitan) couldn't have gone more smoothly and installing DiskStation on those units as well to backup pictures gives an extra piece of mind. We have a primarily Mac network with iOS devices and everything works well. The Surveillance station is a nice feature and we can view our home security cameras remotely via the iOS app. I've barely scraped the surface of what this unit can do, but am thrilled so far.

not sure why anyone would buy anything else and this device is no exception - very happy with the purchase
Synology NAS's are light years ahead of the competition, not sure why anyone would buy anything else and this device is no exception - very happy with the purchase!

Life saver!
These synology units are excellent for on-site backups and data storage. They work great for nas access for clients and also for remote access. These are very configurable and also seem to be very robust.

Great product!
Great product for our small office. Setup was a breeze and has worked flawlessly since we got it. We played with a freeware version for a bit but it just isn't worth the time.

Will buy again...
A lot faster than I would had expected. I have ten of the larger units and needed a smaller unit for a very specific use case. The bonded NICs work great.
