TiptreeOrange Marmalade, 12 Ounce Jar

Wilkin @ Sons Ltd 'Tawny' Orange Thick Cut Marmalade is great stuff - Amazon informs me I'm just ordering my seventh jar of it, and I bought a few more at a fancy food store before that. But understand exactly what this kind of marmalade is before you buy it. Smucker's it ain't.As the ingredient list notes, it's made with Seville oranges and sugar, nothing else. The Seville orange or bitter orange is not very sweet, and has an intense pungent bitter flavor not everyone likes. (The pulp is quite inedible.) Bitter oranges have been grown in Spain for at least 1300 years, and are exported to marmalade makers in England.Every jar I've ever opened has contained numbers of big chunks of candied orange peel. I always fish out a couple of these for myself when I fix my wife's breakfast.

This marmalade is so wonderful!! I have made marmalade in the past, using a variety of oranges including some Seville. Those are hard to come by where we live now, and I am getting past the age of making my own. This marmalade is every bit as good as homemade!! Thick and tangy, not just sugary, almost watery store brand marmalade that tastes like disappointment. THIS is thicker, with a rich orange flavor and that tangy, sort of bitter yet sweet taste that Seville oranges bring. 😋Shipped quickly and very well packaged, insulated well in bubble wrap. No damage and no leakage, even though we live at 6,000 ft (altitude seems to promote leaking for some things...). Delivered quickly. I will definitely be buying this again from this seller!

This was a delicious marmalade. I'm not sure if twice as delicious as the American versions which are half as much, but I very much enjoyed it. It's a tad too sweet, but I loved the bitterness from the Seville organges and the texture of the orange peel.

Classic Orange Marmelade, perfect balance of bitter and sweet. Pay no attention to the reviewers who thought it was awful because it was not sweet; it is supposed to be bitter; It is for adults, not babies. The closest thing to TipTree outside of Britain, is Bonne Maman, from France. Bonne Maman has a fine sliced rind in it, while Tiptree has a coarser cut rind. I like the chunky, chewy stuff, others may prefer the thin rind. Bonne Maman also contains some lemon juice, and may be just a tad more acidic. This may be added to boost the flavor just a bit. Both marmelades claim to be made from Seville oranges, and Tiptree claims only two ingredients: Seville oranges and sugar. Bonne Maman uses Sugar, brown sugar, lemon juice and Seville oranges, but manages to come out tasting almost identical to TipTree. TipTree is a bit more pricey than Bon Maman, at 52 cents an ounce, v 46 cents, and the Bonne Maman widemouth jars are very useful for home canning and leftovers. So though I prefer the rind in TipTree, and I love it, the flavor is so similar that I think I will be sticking with Bon Maman, for the price and the useful jars.

Ok, first a confession. I am a marmaholic I have a bagel or English muffin with orange marmalade almost every morning. And have for as long as I can rememberMost "American" orange marmalades are all wrong. They use sweet oranges and taste like jellified orange juice. Uh . . . no. A proper orange marmalade is made from bitter oranges - particularly Seville oranges. And preferably it includes chopped pieces of the orange peel. Good marmalades are typically distinguished by the volume and size of these pieces: Fine Cut, Medium Cut, or Thick Cut. I like all types or marmalades, but typically prefer medium cut.Now, I have found some pretty good marmalades from the US and Canada. My personal favorites are Trader Joe's Seville Orange Marmalade (which you can buy here at Amazon or at about 1/4 the price directly from TJ), followed by - believe it or not - Safeway Select Seville Orange Marmalade which AFAIK is the best bang for the buck you can find. They are both real good, and for most folks should probably be all you would ever want.But I'm a marmaholic. I want more.Great Britain is the Land of Orange Marmalade. And there are a few brands imported from England which you might find on your grocer shelf here in the states. The most common ones I see are Dundees (which IMO is not very good), Mackays (maybe even a little worse), and Roses (probably best of this lot). Now I am not saying that these brands are bad, they are just . . . meh. There are so much better options - including the ones from TJ and Safeway that I mentioned above.To go beyond that, you generally have to resort to specialty food markets and the Internet . . . like Amazon! Here you will find some very good British orange marmalades. Duerrs. Frank Cooper. Robertsons (their Golden Shred is especially nice for a thin cut marmalade). All of these represent a step up from the options mentioned above, IMO.Then there is Wilkin & Sons Tiptree Marmalades. IMO, these are the best of this breed of imported marmalades, across the board. Their Crystal Marmalade is an excellent fine cut marmalade. Likewise the Tawny Marmalade for a thick cut marmalade - which I believe is a best seller here at Amazon. But the Tiptree Orange - a medium cut marmalade - is my favorite of the lot. The consistency of the jelly is something I have not found in any other marmalade available in the states. Almost perfect. The size, color, consistency, and volume of orange peel are also almost perfect. And again not matched by any other marmalade that I know of which is available in the states.If I was going to give one jar to someone who had never tried orange marmalade before, this would probably be it.Now mind you, this is NOT my favorite orange marmalade in the world. My favorites are all private label marmalades for Fortnum & Mason, an upscale market in London and the royal grocer for more than 150 years. However, AFAIK no one in America carries their marmalades. You used to have to travel to London (which I have done a few times) but in the past few years they have exported to the US with a very hefty shipping charge (I have ordered directly from them this way). And I am guessing that you have to have a real passion for marmalade and have eaten a lot of it from a lot of different brands over the years before you would find any significant difference between the Fortnum & Mason marmalades and this Tiptree Orange marmalade here from Wilkin & Sons.Bottom line, if you are looking for a top drawer orange marmalade, and assuming that you are not nearly as obsessed with marmalade as I am, then you can end your search right here. This is the real deal.
