This book is an excellent overview of the wide variety of beliefs and practices within the umbrella that is contemporary Paganism. It is both a great reference book and useful starting point. This book is excellent both for those who study Paganism (thanks to its academic, sourced approach) and Pagans who are looking for inspiration (since it covers such a wide variety of different beliefs and practices). The treatment of the material is broad, yet comprehensive, and it is good as both an introductory and more advanced book. This is not a how-to book. It does not contain exercises, rituals, or guides. It is a broad academic treatise, but I have still found it invaluable in my practice.I have given away several copies, and I have lost count the number of times I have used it as a reference. If you were to get only one book on Paganism, this is the one.
