Great Book, and Tired of the Egoistical Reviewers
We always find reviewers such as:"this is just common sense, what a waste of money""I wish he would have used typescript at least"Developers like this:a) are not truly reading the bookb) are egoistical devs who do not need to be in our profession and who influence our profession in the worst ways possibleWith that stated, I have to say that you can tell this book was carefully written, and Martin makes sure to explain WHY you aren't seeing stuff like typescript as well as I love this line in the book "Some of the refactorings, such as Extract Method or Move Field, may seem obvious. But don't be fooled. Understanding the mechanics of such refactorings is the key to refactoring in a disciplined way".For those of you who are here to bash the book because you're all knowing, know that there are many young developers in front of us who are still trying to learn and mold their young careers. In fact there are old devs still doing the same. It's called Software Craftsmanship. If you think this book is beneath you, please leave our profession, I beg you.I know a lot of Software Craftspeople and Artisans who use this book all the time, including myself who have coded over 20 years.

New material - new refactorings
I've been impatiently waiting the second edition ever since I heard it was coming. If you're like me, looking for an excuse to re-read Refactoring, now is the time. Some of the new refactorings, like Split Phase, fill me with glee because there's finally a formal approach to something I've just been winging for several years now. It draws attention to the practice of splitting out computations from rendering/formatting, which is an unfamiliar topic for many developers but it's absolutely crucial for high-quality code. There's a strong mix of classic refactorings from the original book, too, updated and broadened to apply to any programming language. I am very happy with the code formatting on kindle, which has rarely been the case. Definitely worth the wait!

Tiny font, hard to read. Plain old Javascript. Overpriced.
The font the code is printed in is very condensed and hard to read. The content of the book is in plain old Javascript, which was surprising for a 2018 book. Typescript would have been a better choice, IMHO. No one actually writes plain old Javascript nowadays.Disappointing, could have been better. No worthy of a $50+ price tag.

Disappointing
I'm gonna have to say I'm pretty disappointed by this book. I really like the author's others books, such as UML distilled and NoSQL distilled, but definitely not this book. First of all, this book is really verbose. For example, is there really a need to use three pages to explain the pattern "Decompose Conditional" using small fonts? I would say half page is more than enough and this is essentially the whole pattern followed by this book. Secondly, most of the patterns the book talks about are pretty much "common sense" if you know how to design object oriented software. I can see this book can be useful for inexperienced programmers or students, but definitely not worth the time for experienced engineers. Finally, this book is very overpriced.

Wonderful--see attached photos; no missing pages for me
This book arrived in perfect condition. After reading another review, I checked over my book for missing pages. There were none. It is a Christmas gift for my husband. I can't comment on the contents of this book, so I posted some photos to let you see for yourself. Hope they help!

Verbose but great content
I agree with some reviewers here -- this book is verbose. Martin Fowler tends to write comma-separated sentence across a few lines. I got tired and lost focus after a few minutes of reading.Chapter 3- Bad Smells in Code would be easier to understand after understanding the later chapters. The examples and concepts that are introduced are informative and make you want to run back to your code.I would use this book to skim relevant topics before refactoring a block of code instead of reading cover to cover.

Clear, concise, very informative, and easy to understand.
Very well written. Concise and the author gets right to the experience of refactoring through an example. Immediately, I learned a ton just from the introductory example. The rest is just as good. For those who don't know what to do when handed a bunch of legacy code, but don't know where to start, this book is for you.

Good examples
The examples in the book are great case studies for how to refactor bits of code. I don't agree with all of the principles, but that's to be expected. The books is mostly examples and only the first couple of chapters are on theory. It's great if you are already bought into the idea and just need to learn how to do it as opposed to convincing someone that refactoring should be done.
