I am not sure what the 2 & 1 star reviews are about. I loved the original with Michael Caine back in the 60s.Jude Law does a wonderful job of breaking the 4th wall, talking to the audience. Yes, he is flip, shallow, a user for the first nearly half of the movie. But he loses the one real chance for true love (Marisa Tomei's character) and begins to question his actions, what life is "all about."Not just losing her but also after two big scares (one involving his overactive male member, the other taking a one night stand to a women's clinic). And what happens with that woman later--these events really turn him around. He hopes life could be good with the older woman (Susan Sarandon) but she ditches him for (I won't spoil it).So the movie begins with a wild sex scene in the limo with Jane Krakowski (I love her, she is SO hilarious in 30 Rock.) And it ends with Alfie running into her on the Brooklyn Bridge as he has been contemplating all his mistakes (especially the Huge F*** up with his best friend played by Omar Epps). Sad, contemplative for both of them.Everyone in this film does a fine job of acting. Great cast. Direction wonderful. Cinematography lovely.Jude Law can do what only very fine actors can do. Maybe it's his stage training. He can show 3 feelings in quick succession without saying a word. Shock. Fear. Sadness. Or awe, desire, let down. And it is completely naturalPeople who say this film is dated haven't watched it all the way through. Yes, he is a total philanderer at first (like Michael Caine's Alfie). But he walks along the beach with the older man, seekingn wisdom. I am so glad I watched this movie. And I'm SO glad that I left My Alfie (a gorgeous Irish cop) for my husband, a steady, good, smart fellow (34 years this June).

Michael Caine's original Alfie vs Jude Law's Alfie. Took a chance and was surprised!
In my opinion, a better modern take on Michael Caine's original, Alfie. Not that Caine's is bad, but I like Jude Law's version slightly better. Law's character is more of an egotistical bloke who reckless ways "wreck" those who he encounters without thought to anyone except himself. As his ways unravel, he realizes that his selfish actions has done more harm than what he thought. There's a startling moment that makes him realize that he's not all that he thinks he is, and he realizes this in other moments when he re-encounters those of his past. More than likely, one would probably hate Jude's Alfie character or say it's typical of guys like him, but his character makes him go from being a jerk to understanding to sympathetic to possibly likeable because of his change.

One of my favorite movies
I watch it each Christmas to remind me where I come from. A cautionary tale for those of us who used to live fast and free. It's not all models and bottles. Know what I mean?

Nia Long's best role
Basically, I like this move. Jude Law is good in this role and as a morality tale it works pretty good. I have not seen the original so I can't make that comparison. The only reason I watched this film is because Nia Long is in it and recently I've became very interested in her career. Even though she doesn't have a lot of screen time in this movie, her role is very impactful on the main character unlike many of her other characters that she plays.

Movie? What movie?
The reviews here are pretty accurate.I watched this because:A. I had a huuuuge celebrity crush on Jude Law back in college andB. Jane Krakowski is in itI re-watched it after 15 years to feel better about myself for a minute, and it worked. Because it was so bad.PS: He was AMAZING and hilarious as Dom Hemingway, so if you haven't seen it, watch it.Also Music From Another Room was what I'd watch as a 20-something & sniffly, and it always was a better day after that... I'll always love that one even if it is a crap movie, and I'll never apologize for it.

Great service and quality product.

disappointing
very poor version of the original. Set in America a Cockney just doesn't fit. Jude Law tried his best but it was long drawn out, I got very bored. Not the ALFIE, we all remember and love.
