Excellent Build, Excellent picture and sound quality.
I bought this player after reading reviews about its nice build quality and very good picture and Sound Quality. While I was unboxing it, I was quite amazed at how much this thing weighed (about 8 pounds). Once I hooked it to my Samsung 40" 4k smart tv and got it configured. I was glad to see how great the picture and sound quality were. So far, I have played about a handfull of bluray discs and they played flawlessly. I have not tried 4k discs quite yet, so I don't know if I will experience skipping/freezing as some reviewers have mentioned. There are quite a few settings in the setup menus for picture, sound etc. The user interface and home screen are not the prettiest by any means, but they get the job done! One thing that I found with this unit that most players don't often include are compatibility with SACD and DVD-Audio. I have not tried those features yet! Also, this player features bluetooth connectivity, which is not a common feature with many bluray players. I have not yet tried this feature out either. The remote control that came with the player is far from being the best, but it isn't the worst remote that I've used either! While I do like most things about this player, there are a few things that I will mention that could be better. With this model being Sony's flagship disc player, they should have added a front panel display. Also, according to some other reviews there should be auto-detect for Dolby Vision. The networking features in this player are quite limited. Only three streaming apps. It is hard to judge this player mainly on that since most players from other brands nowdays have that amount or fewer apps. Since the player is connected to a smart tv, (that has more app options than I can count) I will not be using this unit for its streaming apps. In addition, I was encountering some error messages when trying to operate the network features. I don't think that the errors are unique to this model because I've experienced the same kinds of errors on other Sony models that I have used. I do highly recommend this player for its excellent picture and sound quality and wide disc compatibility. However, I recommend that the connected tv be used for streaming internet content, if it has those features. Overall, a very nice machine made by Sony!

Built like a tank!
This thing is incredibly over built! Very heavy duty chassis and it appears to be powder coated! And it’s HEAVY. way better built than I’d anticipated. This is a replacment for a Sony blue ray from 2012. The uhd picture is insanely better. I’ve watched two 4k UHD films so far and both audio quality and video are excellent. My old blue ray had a problem with locking up requiring the player to be unplugged to reboot. No similar issues so far 🤞. The dvds load quickly. The remote is substantial and works well. Makes me sad that Sony has discontinued this unit and the replacement is a small chassis light weight build product. Hope they make a product this good in the future again!

Amazing picture and sound quality
We hooked it up to a sony bravia 65 in,all the setup including wifi was a piece of cake sound through TV speakers, excellent quality..we put in an old 1971 movie-"The Homecoming-A Christmas story "(The Waltons). We felt like we were in the movie, the colors were so vivid, we have never enjoyed that movie that much, kept saying "Wow"!

Nice Picture Quality!!!
This is a great piece of tech but it occasionally freezes during playback after an hour or so of use - it evidently gets hot and freezes as reported by several others - I will be purchasing a small fan to place next to it --- I really love the picture and sound this unit delivers!

Great Dolby Vision/Atmos capable player to compliment home theater setup
Researched various mid-range players and decided to go with the Sony 800M2 model. Being forwarded about having to manually enable Dolby Vision, we have found that extra setup step not to be an issue. The player operates as expected, providing an outstanding 4K UHD picture (Dolby Vision is likewise eye popping for those discs that support DV). Dolby Atmos sound comes through via the Dolby TrueHD codec on our setup. Setup was easy. We used a single HDMI cable into the back of our Sony Bravia OLED tv. We did see some annoying audio/video mismatch which was solved by replacing the older HDMI cable with an uprated high speed Monster cable. Likewise we had to change the tv’s hdmi port setting from Standard to Enhanced to accommodate the higher bandwidth requirements of the 4K UHD and Dolby Atmos signals. Operating and navigating through the user interface is about as simple as it gets. Aside from the Dolby Vision toggle, we’ve left all other settings as-is. We don’t use the player’s built-in streaming apps, preferring our Roku player instead. FYI, other reviewers have complained about the player’s apps not supporting Dolby Vision (?). Other reviewers have complained about freezing and/or stuttering picture during playback. We have now played 5 of the 4K UHD Blu-ray Discs (all sourced from our local public library) and can report we did experience freezing on 3 of them (2 others played flawlessly). The freezing issues always occurred in the same spot on a particular disc, but none of the 3 froze in the same spot as other reviewers have complained about (eg always freezing on a later chapter or xx minutes into the movie). Further investigation of the 3 problem discs showed a variety of both scratches and fingerprints on the playing surface. The 2 no-problem discs were free of all markings. From this info, I’ve concluded the freezing we experienced was due to disc defects (scratches, fingerprints) and not an inherent flaw with the player itself. Like others have noted, it would be great if Sony would make the player auto-detect and enable Dolby Vision vs. the current manual activation now required. Aside from that one well documented item, this player is well worth the price.

First UHD player, very nice
Was worried when I found out these are on the cheaper side, but I'm not in the market for a $1k physical media player. This works wonderfully for me and plays everything fine. 4K discs need to be absolutely spotless, which isn't hard to do. Very pleased.

Why didn't anyone mention the green screen?
It pains me to write this review because I've been a Sony fan for decades. All four of my amps are Sony and every DVD player and car stereo I've ever owned are as well. Their set-up and use has always been intuitive and the quality top notch. That s not the case with this unit and I'll tell you why. Today almost all of my entertainment is streaming content and Youtube is my primary source of that material. When I went looking for an upgrade to my current players Sony was the only product line I was interested in based on my years of experience. That was a mistake. While this player may exhibit some of the finer qualities I've grown accustomed to it failed in one important aspect. Namely it could not and would not play a single Youtube movie no matter what settings I used. At first I thought it was a low quality HDMI cable, so I switched that out for a high speed version. When that didn't work I bought a certified Monster cable with the same result. I tried three other TV's and every HDMI port they had available and it still failed. I"m not sure why I get the green or black screen when I try to play a movie because everything else works, but I'm done troubleshooting someone else's problem. I was easily able to return the first unit thanks to Amazon's amazing product support policies and I'm returning its replacement for exactly the same reason. No matter what I tried this player failed to perform a simple task, the only one I had any intention of using it for. This may be a great unit in other areas but I'm giving it one star for its green screen of death when it tries to play a Youtube movie. Sorry Sony, but you messed up with this player and instead of being an upgrade it looks like a giant step backwards.
