Sierra Stories: Tales of Dreamers, Schemers, Bigots, and Rogues

This collection of stories from the Sierra Nevada mountains and foothills was written by a professor at Sierra College the local community college in Grass Valley and Rocklin, CA. As I live in Nevada City, this book was a fun read. Some of the stories I knew about and many were new to me. It’s a short book but I would recommend it for anyone interested in the history of the Sierra Nevada mountains from the middle 19th century to now.

Some of these stories were slightly familiar, others unknown. They were all wonderful to read, as I have been a frequent visitor to the Sierra Nevada Mountains since my early teen years. Those visits includedhiking, backpacking, camping, snow skiing and many National Park visits. It's so interesting to read some of these back stories to California history. It's a great selection of characters and events that anyone who loves our glorious Sierra Nevadas will enjoy.

Sierra Stories is a collection of stories about the Sierra Nevada. Some interesting; some not so interesting. Some several pages in length; others barely a page. If you are interested in the history of the Sierra Nevada from the Gold Rush era to the early twentieth century you might like this book, at least portions of it. Overall, it's just an average read; nothing to get excited about. There are more interesting books out there that provide a more in-depth picture of some of the subject matter this book just glosses over.

Great reading

An entertaining book of Sierra history. I buy tons of these kinds of books and this one's above the average. If you like anecdotal history as I do, I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

I really enjoyed this book. The use of lesser known stories made the read easy to dive into. If you're a native Californian like myself, then you'll find this book inspiring and you'll probably want to go out on a road trip and visit some of the historical sites mentioned in the book.

Engaging, informative stories of people who have made the Sierra Nevada their homes over the decades. Exciting from a historical perspective, as well as simply fascinating reading. Gives an insight into a motley collection of people who have left their marks on the mountains or been indelibly stamped by them. A must-read for anyone who loves the Sierras!

This book is very well written and extremely entertaining. The author does a wonderful job of bringing these historical stories to life. I would highly recommend this book.
