Defense of Disavowal
This book provides and in-depth explanation and clinical description of the defense of "disavowal" (the vertical split). Although first described by Freud, Heinz Kohut in his in-depth discussion of the psychoanalysis of narcissistic personalities greatly deepened our understanding of this defense. Also sophisticated discussions of "disavowal" can also be found in the books of M.F. Basch and John Gedo, both eminent psychoanalytic theoreticians in their own right. Importantly, Goldberg does not discuss "splitting" within the personality based on the defense of dissociation. Dissociation is a defense found with physical and sexual abuse and is prominent in its most dramatic form in multiple personality disorders. See the books by Richard Kluft and Frank Putnam for in-depth discussions of the defense of dissociation.
