Long life, both on the shelf and in your device, as well as much larger power flow rate
The main reason to pay more for lithium batteries is the very long shelf life, and the high "energy density" (means they can provide larger power flows, for demanding devices). They also have longer useable life than alkaline. I have a couple of devices that require lithium, because alkaline batteries can't provide enough power. Downsides? They cost more, and they need to be disposed of differently.
