The Golden Glow

This book is darling. It’s all about the beauty of exploring in nature and how precious things in nature should remain in their natural habitats. It’s written in story format that truly engages children too, while teaching a lovely lesson. Can’t recommend enough.

Great book. My child stays interested every time we read it. In the end, it focuses on conservation.

This book is just terrific. If you want to take your kids hiking or backpacking someday, definitely get this book. It has a great story arc, reads really nicely, and the pictures are beautiful.

An incredibly detailed story and a lovely addition to our home book collection.

This is a beautiful book about the beauty and diversity of Nature. Fox love plants and while reading an old botany book, he finds a flower called The Golden Glow. He was not familiar with this flower, so decides he is going to head off to find one. I like how the author and illustrator labeled some of their illustrations. While packing for his trip, trees and flowers along the way with their seeds and leaves are all labeled. He meets up with some friends along the way who help him in his quest. He finally finds the flower he was looking for up on the top of the mountain. He decided that it was so beautiful, that he should leave it where it was. He observed it, drew it, labeled it and put it in his book for others to see. A book showing appreciation of nature in a simple form. It could be read to a class beginning a unit on plants and animals, studying the environment and how to protect it as well as those who just love plants, flowers and trees. My grandson noticed that most of the illustrations were done with geometric shapes. The story did not interest him as much as the illustrations, but he is only 4. I think this book would be good to read to primary aged children up to about 10 or 11.

Fox is off on an adventure! While looking through one of his old botany books, he finds a description without a picture. Reading about the golden glow flower, Fox wants to add this flower to his collection. Before heading to bed, Fox packs his backpack for his hike into the mountain tomorrow.Early in the morning, Fox heads out. Fox studies plants and trees along the way. He sees Bear fishing and asks Bear about the golden glow flower. Bear has never seen one but believes Marmot might know something about it. Wolf takes Fox to Marmot and Marmot tells Bear where the flower is located. Fox is excited but the journey will take a while. I liked how everyone helped Fox along the way and how Fox didn’t give up during his long hike. It is getting dark and Fox decides to set up camp. It’s a good thing that he did too. Eventually, Fox finds the beautiful golden glow flower and what he does with it, proves to me that Fox cares for the world around him.This is more than just a story book, it’s a book covering some science topics also. It mentions and illustrates different trees and their leaves, a variety of flowers, and the different mountain life zones Fox sees. Written on cardstock, this book is a beauty. The illustration of the golden glow flower lit up the page with its reflective paper. I enjoyed following Fox on his walk and I enjoyed the illustrations tremendously.

My children got this as a Christmas gift last year after it was included in the Globe and Mail recommended books for kids list. We love it so much, I bought copies for several friends this year. One of them has told me that it is the nicest children's book she's ever received - I agree. A beautiful book.
