Explains so much
If you have any questions about the history of Scotland, England, France, and a bit of America, as it relates to Outlander (and all the books) this helps. Info on the kings of Scotland,England, and France...background on the wars...good stuff. My main complaint is that the author spells Jamie's name Jaime through much of the book unless pulling directly from the words Diana wrote. She got a couple of other details wrong, but nothing quite as glaring as misspelling the main male character's name.

I would definitely not recommend this book
I would definitely not recommend this book. After reading Jamie's name spelled as Jaime repeatedly, I wanted to pitch my Kindle. Couldn't the author afford a copy editor?

Kind of a hodgepodge
Seems rather loosely organized, would have benefited from more editing. Best read, for me, to fill little bits of time to avoid my frustration with not enough editing.Later: now that I've been stewing about this for a few days, isn't it rather rude, when the primary author spells her character's name j-a-m-i-e (he's a Scot, after all), for this author to spell it j-a-i-m-e when referring to him herself (vs. quoting Ms. Gabaldon)?

Tourist Booklet, Not Worth the Money
An entire waste of money. This is a booklet that you might find in a hotel lobby or local tourist destination in Scotland or American Highland Games event. Poorly written and not very well researched. Don't waste your money.

not very impressed
The content is nothing new. Reading most articles will educate you to the same material. I felt the organization of the book was very disjointed. One minute we are discussing how the 1st book was imagined, then we jump to a theme of the strong woman. It seemed like the book was cut and pasted together in a hap hazard way.Got so irritated w it I stopped reading. If it hadn't been on my phone I would have thrown the book out.

Great Background Informationfor Outlander Fans!
As an Outlander addict, this book was a wonderful supplement to the books! Franken povides a background into Gabaldon' s research and writing of the series, and gives the reader information that helps in understanding many events in them. I really enjoyed this book!

It has some quite good bits in it
As the rating says it's ok. It has some quite good bits in it, BUT.....obviously there is either something wrong with Ms Frankels spell check, OR she never really read the books. The male lead characters name is JAMIE, not JAIME, as over and over again come up in the book. That bit was very annoying.

Valerie is very specific in dealing with her subjects given in the title. As I mentioned with her other book, she refers to Game of Thrones as well as Outlander, and she uses many quotes from the books. I think that she adds some valuable details to one's understanding of the life and times that are not necessarily that familiar to us.

Disappointing
This was not as good as I hoped it would be. One o the biggest annoyances throughout the entire book, was that the author named Jamie for "Jaime" at almost every turn. It was just a few times that she obviously forgot herself, or quoted directly from another source that she got it right. That was horribly frustrating! Besides the book seemed badly organized, messy and confusing to read, as there was much jumping back and forth through times, places, legends characters - no system whatsoever. Also, a constant flow of chapters from the books, made me feel like this book would have been just a third of it's length without the quotations. I feel none the wiser about the highlands, nor it legends and sadly not the character / author either. And as that was the point about me buying the book - meh! I will not recommend this, even to avid fans of both books and the TV adaptation. Read the books or watch the show one more time over instead of buying this book. Bad. Almost a waste of money, and that is a harsh comment from a book-lover like myself.

HOW do you spell "Jamie"?
This is quite an entertaining book, though I'm wondering how much of it is available elsewhere. The principle problem I have is, how can anyone write a book about a series of books and misspell one of the main character's names most of the way through?I haven't decided whether to return it or not yet...
