Great reference book
Not exactly what I was looking for but they do explain a lot. And there is a lot of reference material there. If your looking for an artists perspective on the process of traditionally drawing a cityscape, go to YouTube. This will help once you have the basics down.

Great book, Keep in mind what you style is and take what you can from this book
Very similar to my review on the Style School Vol. 2. This book is a great way to find some techniques and some pointers on TRADITIONAL JAPANESE SEQUENTIAL ART. If you are looking more for modern or Americanized, I would go with a different book. I enjoy this book in particular because it actually gave me an idea on what i need to for my backgrounds, My personal artistic struggle. that would be another reason to recommend the book.If you struggle drawing specific things, suck as background, great book for you.If you enjoy Japanese art and want to venture down the path of manga, GREAT BOOKIF you want more practice and in-depth about drawing modern backgrounds for american comics, I wouldn't recommend this book.a lot of the geographical architecture is very foreign. But all in all, Great book, learned a lot and will venture into the other volumes.

a handy workbook for inspiration, not education
This book doesn't claim to be a "how to draw" manual, which is good, because it isn't! That being said, professional manga artists frequently use pre-rendered backgrounds in their scenes, whether directly clipped or traced. These are free to use directly for non-commercial purposes, but are much more useful as "pose reference" for drawing your own backgrounds. While previous books in this series, such as Manga University: I-C Background Collection Workbook Volume 2: High Rises and City Streets have focused on busy downtown commercial areas, this one is full of sleepy domestic neighborhoods and small, family stores. Each picture has two versions: plain lineart and screentoned. In the back of the book, several pictures are given special treatment, such as demonstrating how lighting the same scene can make it appear to be broad daylight, twilight, or nighttime. Whether you're a comic artist or do stand-alone illustrations, this book definitely helps flesh out your work with realistic backgrounds.

Useful! :D
It's only got steryotypical manga neighborhoods and parks, but there are several other volumes if you need anything more. I am drawing scenery that has nothing to do with "modern Japanese neighborhoods" but by tracing a few of these I figured out how to draw backgrounds for other sorts of places. (less realistic places even!)

Drawing backgrounds never seemed so fun before.
I don't usually depend on books to learn how to draw, so I can't tell how helpful this one was, it was a bit helpful to me, but the best part is, you can have it just for the art, it's detailed and look so amazing!Drawing backgrounds never seemed so fun before.

NOT copyright-free!! Misleading :(
This book is sold as background materials that you could use in a comic - BUT THEN IT CLEARLY STATES THAT YOU CAN'T (inside the front and back covers). These images are not license-free, and you're not allowed to use them in a comic book that you might sell (personal/noncommercial use only).I think that's intentionally misleading advertising. If I wanted images that were only for personal/noncommercial use, I can find literally thousands of those (higher quality), for free on the internet. I'm so upset about this :(

It's OK
Same as the Tokyo Sites edition in terms content. Different pictures, but the same format, the same bit on screen tones. Again, a goof reference that is not entirely necessary. A little more bulk would have been good.

Ganz okay
