Gogol is brilliant and hilarious!
I re-translated the first three stories to capture Gogol's play with sound--rhyme and rhythm. My afterword explains the games he plays with language and his vision of existence carried by these apparently simple tales.

A good one
The DIARY OF A MAD MAN is an insightful story by Gogol that is full of humor, sadness, tragedy and hope. The literary style is first class and fully exposes the inner turmoil of a man with a conflict in his soul. House of the Dead, Union Moujiks, Poor Folks, explore that depth of human suffering that leads to depravity for individuals or groups of people.

Don't waste money: Small type and tiny margins = difficult to read
The format of this edition is so difficult to read that we purchased a better edition. Gogol's stories were fascinating to read and provided insights into Russian culture that still hold true. Purchase a better edition to enjoy reading them.
