The safe itself is "fireproof" but it is not insulated so it will not protect paper or media items from heat damage. The safe is burglary resistant. Putting items in an asbestos bag will not protect them from heat so do not let anyone sell you on that idea. There are no truly fireproof safes on fire resistant safes and then they are only rated for certain types of fires. A safe rated 1 hour 350 degrees should protect documents for up to one hour in a normal building fire; if the fire burns too long or too hot the safe will not protect documents. How far does the keypad protrude from the front? I would like to conceal this with a picture; do you think this would be possible?

I concealed mine with a white board that I hung vertically. I cut wood strips about 3/4 inch thick and glued them to the top and bottom of the white board so it just clears the keypad. For a picture or a tapestry, it might be simpler to fasten a wood strip to the wall and hang the picture from the strip.

How is battery life with brand name alkaline batteries?

I bought this safe in 2014 and just replaced the original factory batteries today (early 2021). On overage I only use the keypad once a month, but I’m beyond satisfied with the battery life. I’m not sure the batteries would last any longer if they were simply stored in a drawer.

How often do the batteries need to be replaced (if rarely opened)?

Personally, I change the batteries every year in my safes and smoke detectors whether they need it or not. Batteries are cheap so why not. I reuse the batteries in remotes and flashlights.
