Superior Update
The new momentum element seems to be controversial among fans of the series but personally I appreciate it as it adds realistic game play. The faster a skater is moving the more difficult it is to turn a sharper angle. Deking with the puck also slows the player down slightly as it should. Players bump into each other more realistically, sometimes knocking the puck lose. The speed burst is another positive addition. Players fatigue from speed bursts as they would for real. Players seem to reflect their actual skills more accurately so if you have Crosby on a break away in full speed he seems to handle the task with greater skill than an average player. The graphics seem slightly better as well. For example the ice is less reflective which was sometimes a distraction in the previous version. Contact can be made with the goalie which can either lead to a penalty or sometimes jar the puck loose or simply knock the net off the moorings. On that note, goalies have been greatly enhanced. They produce much more realistic rebounds. The puck also never balances on the goalies shoulder for seconds at a time (thank god!). The cut scenes in between game plays is much better. The addition of the camera in net behind goalie is especially welcome although sometimes the goalies backside obscures the action. In general the cut scenes seem to have better camera angles and focus on highlights rather than monotonous plays. It should be said that the arenas seem to be extremely accurate to the actual venues. It's this attention to detail that should be appreciated. There's a feature that lets you play historical NHL moments which can be entertaining to play on occasion but I find it gets a bit boring after a while. It is nice that you have the option to chose a difficulty level in these segments however. Players also seem to look more like the real ones. Some of them still look pretty weird but for the most part, this has been much approved. Overall game play seems to be more unpredictable which is far more entertaining. This seems to be the case with each release. the farther back you go, the more predictable the game was. You could always rely on getting that "glitch goal" but that is getting more and more phased out thankfully. The downsides.. The music selection is still pretty lame. At least there is no rap music... yet. Personally I just disable the music and input my own anthems and rock tunes. The most annoying issue I find in this version is when playing online. Players abuse the poke check feature. The maneuver has become a major aspect of the game when in reality poke checking is just an occasional occurrence. I really hope this issue is somehow amended in NHL14. If poke checking is more likely to draw a tripping penalty this may resolve the problem. Fighting isn't really an issue but I find it pretty redundant and boring. I've heard this aspect is going to be enhance in NHL14 so look forward to that. For now I just avoid it. Sometimes goalies try to play the puck in bad situations. Several times I seem to have a goalie rush out of net to set the puck for the D only to have an opposing forward rush down and swipe it first or intercept the goalies pass. Would really like to see this toned down drastically as I greatly prefer to let my D handle the puck instead.Overall this game is excellent and any hockey fan should indulge!(UPDATE)I just want to emphasize the fact that poke checking is out of control in this game (at least on the online game mode). There should not be a body check count on the end of period game review but a count for poke checks. It really is that ridiculous. EA Sports better correct this in future releases!

Very good game, but not great.
NHL 13 is very good but not great... Considering they had a full year to develop the game from NHL 12, it's little disappointing that they didn't work on improving the graphics and the game interface. The game actually takes longer to load and sometimes it feels like it bugs down when it needs to handle multiple processes. On some replay scenes, the graphics gets pixelated and fuzzy. That isn't exactly what you'd expect from a game that's developed for the HD TV market. Furthermore, many stoppage cut scenes still look and feel very artificial. Like a player would just stand there staring into space or the goalie would be back in his circle ready to guard the net when in fact the net was just pulled from its moorings. Fighting scenes are still terrible as everyone in the background would disappear and the two fighters involved would be visible. No ref would stop the fight and it feels like when a fight begins, you're transported to a boxing match and then re-teleported back to the hockey rink after the match is over. The whole experience just feels quite out of sync with the action of what's going on in the hockey game. Having the ability to have multiple fights would have been nice. A true hockey tradition after all. Linesmen still don't exist on the ice and I still find it impossible to win faceoffs (maybe that's just me).EA Sports added a lot of, what I would consider, gimmicky improvements (like the NHL Moments section) that doesn't really deal with the fundamentals of improving the game overall. It's like they just took NHL 12 and added more game modes. Very fun to play with the first few times but get's fairly old quickly. It is a shame they also didn't expand on giving more options and features for the GM and Be a Player modes. Having the ability to customize the team more would have been better. The new trade block system and trade negotiation system seems to have wised up a bit but it's it still feels like the computer GMs still would only flinch if there was a deal leaning more towards their end. Though naturally, I would suppose this would normally be the case in real life but salary dump trades and roster clearing trades would have been something nice to see, especially when a team is above the salary cap before the start of the season. The computer instead just dunks the players to the minors. As if someone with a long term multimillion dollar contract would accept being demoted to the minors. On the positive end of things though, they did add more animations to the players while in game and the game plays is much more balanced. Not only superstars are the ones that keep scoring and it does feel more like a real hockey game than say a video game over NHL 12. I would assume the new system of ranking the players had something to do with this and it seems to work. So far, so good. The skating system seems to be the most improved aspect of the gameplay while on ice. Skates feel more realistic than NHL 12 and the fluidity of the in-game action seems and feel more like the real thing. A good improvement over NHL 12 that's worth applauding EA for. If you are a casual NHL gamer though, it may not be as obvious, but as a veteran player who plays full seasons, the difference is obvious.Overall, it's still a good game and I am still very happy with it. Since NHL 12 was a good game, this "expanded NHL 12 version" is still much appreciated on my end and with the NHL lookout already in full swing, NHL 13 fills in my current hockey urges very nicely.
