it is a motorcraft part. I installed it in my Mercury and it is working fine

Q: What activates the relay... positive to the small post or negative?

The small post is the 12 volts (positive) from the switch inside the vehicle when it is in the start position. There is no negative to this solenoid other than the case itself. The negative is through the chassis ground. If you have a negative wire it would go to the screws that hold the unit to the firewall.

This motorcraft starter selenoid is very good quality. It’s more expensive than the aftermarket ones, but I like to have peace of mind when it comes to my truck starting. No more ‘click click click’ when I turn the key on my 93 ford explorer 😃
