Breaking the Surface: The Greg Louganis Story

What a remarkable man! What a remarkable diver! What a remarkable film! Mario Lopez gives an excellent performance as the iconic diver. He captures the struggles of his character with fine tuning. We identify with Greg’s disappointments, his successes and his relationships with family and lovers. How he handles his HIV infection is perfectly portrayed.The film inspired me to purchase the Greg’s book on Amazon which just arrived. I am anxious to fill in all the blanks in his story that the film could not include. I also ordered the film « Back on Board ».I was just a kid when Greg went to Montréal for the Olympics and have always idolized this amazing man.Don’t miss this wonderful film.

I just LOVED this movie. First of all, there is plenty of great acting on everyone's part. So much so, that I actually took a couple of breaks while watching it because I felt there were aspects that were pretty emotionally intense (i.e., the way Greg was treated by his father). Second, the story is just inspiring. We often only see the glitter in our hero's lives while forgetting that they might have had to slug through a lot of pain to get where they ultimately ended up. Third, the gay-coming-out part was done in what I would consider to be a somewhat understated manner, so even if you're watching this with... um shall we say... a more conservative type of individual, I think you could be comfortable that there wouldn't be anything sufficiently graphic to upset this other person (assuming you would care about that one way or the other). And finally, Mario Lopez (the star who plays Greg Louganis) is just GORGEOUS and an absolutely wonderful performer as well! He was SO perfect for this role! I would highly recommend this movie.

The film was very well done with great casting. One could easily believe that Mario Lopez really was Greg Louganis; Mario did an excellent job. The photography, with cleverly interwoven footage of the real Olympics, was excellent.The film does not have an astounding plot filled with either mystery, suspense, romance or intrigue, but that's because it is I believe an accurate recording of a real life and real lives never reach the pinnacle of Hollywood standards.But it's an overall good film with some valuable life lessons for young men, straight and gay alike. At this point in time it may be a little "dated", but some things never change. Young men today are just as naive and vulnerable as Greg was and just as willing to take dangerous risks which could ruin their futures. Feeling that they are immortal; thinking that they will never get sick and never grow old; thinking that THEY are in control, they make disastrous decisions which impact on the rest of their lives.The film was tastefully done with no "in your face" sexuality. It does not promote the gay lifestyle at all but simply exposes how much more difficult it is for gay man to succeed than for a straight man, having to expend a lot of valuable energy simply on covering up and hiding and leading a double life.It's sad that so many talented young people have to stay in the shadows for fear of exposure because society at large does not want anyone to know that a "gentle-man" can be strong, courageous and honorable and can equal or exceed the limits of a straight man. Fortunately, Greg Louganis was not one of the hiders and had the courage to "come out" and make life just a little easier for others.

It had an excellent plot and Mario Lopez did a good job in this movie.

i have been trying to get this movie for a long time now and now it is on dvd,, and i finly find it and now i got it....this is a real good movie ...a good life time movie..i liked alot...Thank you Amazon.com

I'm going with all the other - 5 star reviewers - OUTSTANDING FILM - Mario Lopez was a Pleasure to Watch and all the supporting actors did a fantastic job as well. This is a Great Film and the talent of all those who worked on this film were clearly evident! WowGreg Louganis should inspire us all!

This was the film story of Greg Louganis' personal great achievements as an Olympic diver and of the struggle to reach that goal with all of the highs, lows and heartbreak of his personal life. Mario Lopez did a creditable job as Greg Louganis and his performance stayed faithful to the book.
