RØDE PSA1 Professional Studio Arm

Now I'm not a boom arm expert but I will compare the Blue Compass boom arm to the PSA1 Rode boom arm so you can understand my reason for the rating. Refer to bottom for quick pros/cons of each boom arms The Rode stays in place no mater where you place your mic. It has one screw on the top joint that controls all the tension. You dont even have to adjust the other joints. Even the angle of that your mic was in will stay the same with the PSA1 Rode because its got two arms that keep the mic angle regardless if the boom arm position. With the Rode, you just have to tighten on the top joint screw and it will stay. I can even adjust the angle the mic is in the boom arm to be horizontally. Comes with an thread adapter too. The only drawback is the there is no housing for the cables and desk clamp is a bit wider but other than that I prefer the PSA1 Rode over the Blue Compass. I can live with thr slightly wider clamp and I can easily buy boom arm cable sleeves or cable sleeves to address the housing issue. Also it does come with 3 velcro strips to hold the cables. In comparison, I like how simple and clean the Blue Compass looks for a 100 dollar boom arm. This boom arm has housring that covers up the wires and cords. (PSA1 Rode lacks)The desk clamp is small , sleek and easy to attach to any desk.(PSA1 Rode lacks)This boom arm just fits comfortably on it. It even comes with an adapter theading for different size mics. What I hated about Blue Compass is what everyone else hates about the Blue Compass; it does not accurately stay in place. (PSA1 Rode does!) If you bend the first joint diagonally and then bend the next joint more than 90s degrees the arm will jolt back and not stay no matter what. Even untightening the tension screw, and adjusting the joint knobs, it will not stay in place accurately. For example you cannot position the last joint( where you can angle the mic horizontally) how you want because it will spring out of position. Refer to picture I'm literally holding it from springing up even with the tension screw adjusted and joints tightened. You are limited on the angles you can place your mic on the Blue Compass because when you move the arm the mic, the arm does not have mechanism to retain the angle. You are subject to the way the angle of the mic is screwed in on sometimes. It might be facing up when you want it towards you. How I wanted my mic was to be horizontal but low near my mouth so that I can be heard and see my computer screen. This is not possible. It is with the PSA1 Rode! The RODE PSA1 Swivel Mount Studio Microphone Boom Arm has been the perfect thing for my audio setup. It holds my AT2020 and Samson SP01 spider shock mount without drooping and yet easily moves with gentle pressure. I mounted the arm on the inside corner of an L-shaped desk and I am enjoying this setup. When I'm not using it, the spring-loaded arm lets me lift it over my head and out of the way. If I want to stand while using it, I just drag it to the right level. When I'm sitting and lean back in my chair, it's easy to pull the arm forward, and when I'm facing the other side of the 'L' to work on my laptop that sits at the end of the desk, the RODE PSA1 easily swivels into position for me. It has that right balance of tension that holds the arm in place and flexibility that lets it move without me having to wrangle it to get a response. Installation of the PSA1 is fairly simple: you can clamp the base to your desk, attach the arm, and extend as desired. Tensioners let you contol how much or how little you want the ends to move at the base and the end, though the joint in the middle appears to be fixed in its tension. There is an optional threaded connector that lets you drill through a desktop and mount the arm directly into your desk for a clean professional look, but I'm content with the clamp. When unpacking the unit, pay attention to the bright yellow warning stickers: the arm is spring-loaded, so you want to be holding it together as you cut the stickers and open the product. Otherwise one side of the arm could fly out and hit something. The materials feel very solidly made, arms, spring, and turnkeys all feel like quality parts. The clamp mount feels like it's a bit less sturdy when handling it, but once mounted I've had no problems. Simple velcro strips let you secure your mic cable snugly to the arm. If you're looking for a long boom arm for your microphone, and your mic and mount weigh about the same as my AT2020 and Spider Mount, this should work just fine for you. If you have more weight on the end, some customers report problems getting the arm to stay upright. I've been very happy with the product.

I can't find much wrong with this boom stand. I have used it with several condenser mic's including audio technica, rode, blue, sennheiser, it's practically obligatory with a Shure SM7B which has been on it for a long time now. Fortunately, I have not had any metal grinding chalkboard sounds with mine. The average weight of microphones in use is 3-4 pounds, but it will do a light SM-57 very well. Although there are some newer products that may be a slight improvement over this classic design, this just works at a good price point. Some points that made this a good choice for me: 1.) It is almost entirely silent when moving. Yes, mine is silent, except for maybe the slightest little random spring "twang" that is hardly noticeable. Holds steady in very precise placement w/no droop ever, even with a pop filter clamped to it. 2.) Flexible mounting options, the edge of a wooden desk rack, edge or a desk, back, etc. or grommet mount anywhere on a surface. Then, if you want to change back, the arm just lifts out of the mount. 3.) The range of movement and distance you can cover is truly impressive. Dual adjustment allows for very precise vertically and horizontally angles of the mic itself. Examples with my studio setup: can swing it down to mic an acoustic guitar seated, back up for standing vocals/percussion/instruments, down and to the side to a guitar combo amp, swing it over the MIDI controller stand. Found the ideal placement of the mount and placed things around it. Covers basically every position required in songwriting/production and changes in a heartbeat. Then stows easily to the side folded up out of the way. Word of caution that should be noted: CAREFUL when opening for the first time that the business end of the stand is not facing towards you! It's relatively easy to make this mistake actually. Face it out and away from you/on it's side, best way to avoid it smashing you in the face or something. Overall good value, happy with it after years of heavy use at this point.

The Rode PSA1 Swivel Mount: Use: I broadcast on Twitch.tv and use this mount on a daily basis for my Audio Technica AT2020. Pros: -Quite durable, sturdy construction -Components fit together smoothly and allow for nearly effortless adjustment -Load-bearing design means that you will never have to screw/unscrew parts of the mount to move the arm: the weight of your microphone actually holds the stand in place -Included wraps and plastic groove on center hinge hold cable securely to the arm and prevent tangling or clutter -Two forms of mounting hardware (clamp or drill-in sleeve) allow you to choose how you want to attach this mount given certain desk types -Magnetic base retention means easy swiveling without excessive wear and tear Cons: -I would have liked to see another Velcro wrap to hold the cable a bit more snug -No clear instructions on how to feed cables through hinges, though it is possible to do and has made things significantly cleaner for me -Poor lubrication on one of the two arms has caused squeaking/squealing when I move the mic around, though nothing a little bit of CLP can't fix -Lack of padding on the base has lead to marking/scratching on my desk, I would recommend some kind of padding underneath the mount, I opted for a used gift card This is a great mount, I upgraded from the $15 generic one that they also sell here on Amazon and it is a night and day difference. This mount is considerably more sturdy, moves easier, and is noticeably bigger which allows for a greater effective range. I have noticed only recently that it has marked my desk. This is mainly because I have an Ikea desk and it is not made from solid wood, it is a form of particle board. Still, I noticed it is because of the padding (or lack thereof) on the bottom of the mount. After several months of use, the padding on the bottom has become completely flat, causing the metal to push into my desk from the side of the microphone. I was able to prevent further damage by placing a used gift card underneath the top part of the mount, thus dispersing the pressure the one side of the mount causes. You can also help by leaving the mount in a "straight up" position when not in use. The noise I hear is only whenever the mic-side arm moves up or down, as there is some kind of friction being produced internally. These are minor gripes, this stand is absolutely amazing otherwise and I see myself using it for a long time to come. I would say it is half-step below professional grade. I could see myself using this for 8-10 hours a day and having no issues with it, but there are minor features I would expect a $100 mount to include. Regardless, there is no question that this stand is incredible and will serve your broadcasting and entertainment purposes for years to come. Side Note: PLEASE obey the warning wrapper on the arm when you open the box where it says the arm is under high-tension, I managed to accidentally get my finger stuck between the two rods on the mount-side arm and man did that sting. BE CAREFUL.

So I was extremely uneasy on getting this for a number of reasons. One reason was that this is rather expensive, but another is that I wasn't sure if it could support the weight of my Blue Yeti with shock mount. And I have to say, I can see why this is expensive. Because this thing really does work, even for some of those REALLY heavy microphones out on the market. This boom arm also supported my buddy's MXL USB .009 which is also rather heavy. So, let me explain how this thing works. It has 2 mounts that you can use to mount this on, one mount is a clamp which you just tighten onto your desk. Another is one where you drill a hole and then you can mount it it your desk. So I use the clamp method so I can reposition the clamp and don't want HUGE holes in my desk everywhere. So onto how this supports the microphones. As you probably already know, stands similar to this use a spring-loaded method where the stand is spring loaded so with no load, this thing will just spring up like an erection(Not a very good comparison but there you go). And that allows it to support lightweight and heavyweight microphones without sagging and still have the ability to lower or raise the height to your preference without ANY sagging. Now, something that some people look at when buying stands, is vibration control. And if that's what I was looking for in this, I would not like it all too much since it does let in quite a bit of vibrations(Varies on your surface). However, no desktop mic stand is meant to act as a shock mount as well. But it does reduce ALOT of vibrations compared to just having the mic on top of the desk with the included mic stands that come with the Blue Yeti and MXL 009. Overall, the price tag is definitely worth the quality since this will get the mic out of your way, looking cool, and will last a LONG time.

This is a great sturdy professional boom arm that you can use for your microphone set up! I set up a Shure SM7B microphone with this arm, and had no issues with it! It’s sturdy, it has a great range of motion, and is quite stable. I would recommend this arm if you’re looking to record videos, podcast, or stream!

If you want the whole experience, you need this. Don't buy the Rode mic and use it on a cheap, flimsy arm. This is the real deal.

Rode PSA1 is the best boom arm in the market. The material are solid and when you touch it you feel it. The desk clamp is strong and can hold it perfectly even with the use of heavy mics like Rode Podmic or Shure SM7B. it stays in the position you set it and never move. it easy to set the position you want with just moving it with your hand and it will stays there forever. it has some Velcro straps for cable management which is a bonus. I highly recommend it.
