Twenty and Ten

Great Book for Sixth Grade Students
I read this book with my sixth grade class. There are a wide variety of readers in my room - from experienced to still learning English. I created a study booklet that aligned with the curriculum (historical background, character development, setting, conflict, 8-point story arc, etc), and set the stage for some wonderful discussions. Many of my students had never considered what they would do if they were asked to risk their lives to save other children just like them. Many of them knew very little about the Holocaust, and this book provides a perfect introduction to this difficult topic because it hints at the tremendous danger the Jewish students were in without going into too much traumatic detail. I was surprised at just how little knowledge of Judaism (or religion in general) the kids had, and we had a Jewish parent come in to the class to give them some introduction to Judaism. After we finished reading the book, my students wrote reviews of the book, evaluating the plot, themes, character development, and strengths/weakness of the book. For your reading pleasure, their endorsements (or not, as the case may be):-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I am reviewing the book “Twenty and Ten”. I find this book interesting and will give multiple reasons why you should read it too. I read this book to do a book report on it. I think it was totally worth it and will tell you why I liked it.This book is about Jewish children arriving at a christian schoolhouse during World War II asking if they can hide from the Nazis with them. Of course they took them in. This book has a mixed theme of friendship and loyalty. The reason for this is because the christian kids took in Jewish kids during World War II. Being as loyal and friendly as they are, the christian kids will try not to tell the Nazis that the Jews are with them. Although the children quickly realize that they are the same as the Jewish kids will they still betray the Jews if they are being threatened? In the beginning of this book I didn’t find it so believable because the Christian kids play pretend about The Flight To Egypt where Jesus, Mary, and Joseph run from Herod’s soldiers. The family were Jews when just a bit later Jews arrive at their schoolhouse. But it makes up for it by having round characters like Denise, doing bad things but also being good. Additionally, it has a good plotline and gets suspenseful. Although, I feel like the author could have added some more details. The author wrote this story well and made it a good story to read. I recommend this book to people who like historical fiction. Because this book is set in the past, specifically World War II, and is based on a true story. My friend told me that this book reminds him of another book called The Hunger Games. Because both books include something to do with war in the story. In the first paragraph I talked about the theme of Twenty and Ten. But in the second I talked about what I think is bad about the book and what I think is good about the book. Finally, in the third paragraph I talked about who I would recommend this book to.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I am a sixth grader in a QSI school. In class for Literature we read the book Twenty and Ten. It is about twenty Christian kids in the French countryside during“ ‘If the Naxis find out, all of you will be shot for this.’ The young man said.” This is a very exciting book about twenty christian kids having an adventure saving Jewish kids. They have to share their food, beds, etc., During World War II, the Nazis are going after the Jews to kill them. While they are sacrificing their lives some problems spring up. How will the christian kids save the Jews if the Nazis come? This story also has some strengths and weaknesses. The book mostly has strengths, some of the include: the author can make the characters well-rounded very well. For example one of the main characters is Janet. She has a great personality. On some occasions she is jealous in others kind and gentle, this shows exactly why she is a great developed character. The author puts all of her passion throughout the book, the chapters, and the pages. This book is also very realistic, it is based on a true story and shows how life for children would be like during World War II. There are not many weaknesses, but I think the book could have been better if there were a couple more surprises. There are a couple surprises, but it could have been better if for example, the Nazis come and find the Jews but they escape or the Nazis find out and attempt to kill the Christian kids. This is a great book for people who like action. I liked this a lot, it was very, very entertaining. Before this book I read Little Women and I was NOT a big fan of that book. But this on the other hand was amazing! I would recommend this book to both boys and girls. My whole class read it and everyone was delighted, about having to have read this book. While I was reading this book it started of (the first two pages) kind-of like a book without any good stuff about it. But after that it was amazing. This book has a small connection to Anne Frank’s Diary. They both happen in World War Two. Also Twenty and Ten represents loyalty and kindness. Like I said in the summary they hide the Jews and give them food, share beds, etc., now that is a GREAT example of kindness. | hope you enjoy this book as much as I do!First of all, again, this book is great you should really read it. My first thoughts were pretty good and if YOU like action and a little bit of history, this will be your favorite book ever!-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Twenty and Ten is a very interesting and not very long book. It is a great book to read as a class as I did in 6th grade! This book is about 20 children who have to save 10 Jews that are wanted killed. If anyone sees the children helping the Jews, the the innocent Jews and Christians would be shot!! I think anyone who likes history and suspense and survival should love this book. Basically I think anyone would like this book. Also it has round characters and I don't think anyone likes flat characters. So definitely read this book.In World War 1 , a school / house on the countryside away from the bombing were twenty Christian fifth graders and 1 adult. One foggy day 10 Jews came to the school / house and asked for protection. Of course the Christians let the Jews in but they new if the Nazis or anyone sees the Christians helping the Jews everyone would be shot!! If the Nazis see the Christians helping the Jews what will they do or where will they hide the Jews? Will they be able to make a plan without getting killed in it? Are they brave enough? This book is very realistic because what happens in the book can happen in real life! The characters in this book are great because they are round. They are also very kind, loyal, brave, and extra smart! This book is suspenseful and very interesting! Mostly all the characters are round characters. For example Henry (one of the characters) is a round characters because he is nice, bossy and great at make believe! I think one thing the author should change is that the children should find the cave in a different way!I really like this book because it is suspenseful fun historical and fun to read. I definitely recommend this book to people who like history and suspense. But anyone would like this book. I would definitely read this book if i were you so go ahead and get it.I really like this book and I think anyone would I liked everything about it! I really liked the theme the author chose!--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I have a read a book called “Twenty and Ten”. I’ve read for a part of my education for my class; literature. And here I am reviewing it. The “Twenty and Ten” book is about twenty children that have to hide from the Nazis in World War II. This book is about survival, because the children are alone in an old school in World War two. Loyalty is in the book, because these children saw Jewish kids in a forest, so they tried all they could to keep them safe in the future. The children were sharing their food, because they didn’t have enough, and they were hiding from the Nazis in a particular place. This book includes the themes of friendship, sharing, and generosity. There are no perfect villains that are very cruel, selfish, jealous, or greedy. The Nazis are the only ones who are more bad than the any other character, but they’re still not fully antagonists. Their personalities are quite strict, but they’re far from being cruel they have only forced the kids to say a few things. Even some of the children betrayed the others. This story is interesting wondering how the characters will . This book is of course realistic not fictional, and it’s even based on a real story.I don’t really like this book that I have read; Twenty and Ten. That’s because it talks about only original children saving themselves; that’s not my style. I’d only recommend this book to eleven or twelve and under. Most kids read these kinds of books, but of course it’s a little different, it’s not like some heroic adventure. However I’ve never read a book including World War two, or anything related to it.And so this book was different to me, it talks about something, that makes me feel that the story is real. Most books that I don’t like have kids as main characters. So like I said this book is not my style. I’d only recommend it to twelve year olds and under, but if the others insist.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I am reviewing a book called Twenty and Ten. You should read it because it is really interesting and you can learn from it, for example, how the Nazis killed the Jews. First, I will tell you a little bit of the book, and the theme. Then, I will tell you if it is realistic and why it is a good book. Last of all, I will recommend it to some people. This book is about courage; when twenty Christian children try to save ten Jewish children from the 1944 Herod’s soldiers when war struck France. How will the 5th graders hide the Jewish children from the soldiers? How will the the Christian children trick the soldiers? Will they succeed to trick the soldiers? The Christian kids make it their job to hide the Jewish children from the Nazi soldiers, but if they don’t, the Jewish children will die.Twenty and Ten is an amazing book with round characters that are easy to relate to. The story is realistic, because it is during World War II. The author wrote the story in a good form and the plotline is realistic. The story is really interesting, because it is historic and you can learn a lot of things about World War II, and it is interesting because a lot of things happen that are unexpected. One thing the author did bad is that the story doesn’t explain how the characters feel.I would recommend it to everybody who are middle schoolers and up, because the World War II book is not very fictional. So I would also recommend it to people that like historical books and realistic books. This book is like the Hunger Games because in the Hunger Games they kill a certain district and in Twenty and Ten the Nazis want to kill Jewish children and Jewish adults. This book is the same in real life like World war II is real and the book is about World War II. It relates to me because I like to pretend war.I think the book is good because it is interesting. The first paragraph is the theme of the book. The second paragraph is the strengths and weaknesses from the book. The third paragraph is who I would recommend it to. I would recommend it to everyone.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I will be reviewing a book called “Twenty and Ten” by Claire Huchet Bishop. Me and my classmates were reading it for a novel study. When I read the back of the book, I thought about some children running from the Nazis. While running they found a school and stayed there for a while. This book is about 20 christians kids that were hiding 10 Jewish children. The christian kids showed bravery and courage. Even though they were scared, they stayed strong and never gave up. Later on, they became really good friends with the Jewish kids. For example, when Arthur, one of the Jewish kids, gave the “gold” to Henry, one of the christian kids. They faced many problems like lying to the Nazis, bringing the food by escaping the school, and many more… I think that the plotline is good. I could understand what exactly was the climax and the other parts of it. In my opinion the flat characters were the young man and Suzanne. Why? Well because they don’t really participate in the book much. Example: the young man only showed in the beginning of the book and Suzanne about 3rd quarter of the book. I really enjoyed this book. I would probably recommend it for boys and girls but mostly for girls, because the narrator is a girl so I thought that the girls will understand more. ‘Cause my teacher had to explain a bit to me. I haven’t read a book that has to do something with war but I did read one about bravery. It’s called “Escaping the Giant Wave.” I really really enjoyed it that and I read it in one day. So again I really enjoyed reading this book and my opinion about it is that it helps you understand a bit about Jews and what actually happened in those days.----------------------------------------------------------------------------The three themes of this book are bravery, kindness and friendship. Bravery is because the children are risking their lives for ten Jewish children from the Nazis war. Kindness is for giving and helping the Jewish children. Friendship is for not letting the Jewish children down. The moment comes when the Nazis arrive and the children find a way to survive. I learned that Jews are just ordinary people. The things that make the book good are that it makes you think about how things were back in those days even now it teaches you about how things don't always go your way in life. The things that make this book bad are that the book is very short and I would like more detail in the book so that it would be longer I think the book is still very good and enjoyed reading it even though it was pretty short.I would recommend this book to people who like suspense. It makes you think about what will happen next. Also it made me think about if I was in those characters places, what would I do, how would I think and would I be scared or not. I would recommend this book to people who like suspense. Twenty And Ten reminds me of the book, Battle Of Gettysburg from I Survived. If you like the Battle Of Gettysburg then you will probably like Twenty And Ten.I read Twenty And Ten because it was a class assignment and we were all reading it together. I really like the book, it gives me happy feelings and sad feelings. The happy part is that the children were showing bravery and they were willing to risk their lives. The sad part is that I had to hear about the hard things they had to go through.Bravery, kindness and friendship is very important in this book because no one wants a book without those things. The book teaches us about how things were. I like this book and I would recommend it to you.-----------------------------------------------------------I just read the book Twenty and Ten, by Claire Huchet Bishop. First of all, I read this book for a 6th grade class assignment. This book gave me a lot of different thoughts, like sometimes it was suspenseful but sometimes it was joyful. For example, I loved how suspenseful it was for most of the book. The book left me with a nice feeling like when you finish a good book.Kids and adults will love the strong loyalty and friendship demonstrated in this story. Kids who were sent to safety, find themselves in the middle of danger. Suddenly, ten Jewish children come to a small school in the country in search of safety. In order to keep them safe, the Christian children will have to risk their lives. How will they hide the Jewish children? Will they betray them? What will happen if the Nazis come?I think this book was believable because it showed how they were scared at all the right times and their feelings were really realistic. There were a lot of round characters for example, Henry, he can be kind and sharing, like when he shared the “gold” with Janet. But he can also be very clever, like when he knew the Nazis would be back. I think this book was well-written because I understood what was going on and I really understood the feelings that Janet was having. But I think the story should have been longer, because it felt pretty short. Or instead of that, she should make another book. I would recommend this book to people who like Historical fiction because this book is based on what could happen in World War II. I would recommend it to people who like books with themes like loyalty or not giving in or up. I liked this book because I like stories where children have to help each other and I also like it because it’s suspenseful in some parts. I really liked this book and I think other people will like it too. Finally I think this book was a good book because it was descriptive. This book had a theme of loyalty and friendship, a book that has good details and is unique.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------This book to me, was very inspiring; it's about twenty Christian children and ten Jewish children in the 1940s. This book was very exciting, and it's pretty much based on modern day Herod’s soldiers. It's based on twenty fifth graders that are sent away from the second world war in France. This book was also very interesting. This amazing book has courage, survival, friendship, bravery, kindness, anti-racism, never giving up and also quick thinking. One event that happens in the book is during world war two, when a young man comes out of nowhere to a fifth graders Christian school / home and asks if they can take ten Jewish children and also hide them from the Nazis. Their teacher ( Sister Gabriel) says that if we do this, we shall never let the Nazis know that they are here, even if they are going to kill us.After the children talked, the children agreed and welcomed the other children. The thing that I honestly liked about this book was the friendship, sharing, caring and mostly I liked the children's bravery. I really thought that this book was very interesting and is really based on what Jewish children and people had to go through and how people had to sacrifice themselves for others. What I did not like was that it made me think about what really happened during world war two.I recommend this book for you if you like historical fiction or books about children in the past. This book is actually based on a true story. If you like reading books about children I really think you should read this book. I think all people from age 11 and up should really experience what times were like during second world war were like to Jewish people and really to anybody in those times. I say that everyone should totally read this amazing book.My final answer is yes, I want you to read this and I really recommend this book for you. I think you should take my advice. Do you like reading about how much food there was in those times? Well read this book!.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------I read this book, because the picture on the cover was really cool and when I read the back of the book I thought I would learn somethings about Jewish people. Before I read this book I did not know that Jewish people were that poor, sad and worried. All the girls, boys, adults everyone, PLEASE READ THIS. The twenty kids have to risk their life to save the ten Jewish kids. Will they be able to hide ten Jewish kids? Where are they going to hide them so the soldiers won’t find them? Before the two soldiers come, the twenty kids shared everything they had with the Jewish children. The Jewish kids learned that they are no different than the twenty kids. And the twenty kids learned that Jewish kids are no different then them. Caring is sharing, everyone needs to help a person that needs help. This book is realistic, because it talks about how much the Jewish people needed help. I think everything makes sense and the author explains the story really well. But I think at the end it needs more details about who the main soldier is. I think the young soldier should be much meaner. This story is really interesting, because it talks about Jews needing help for life. I learned that Jews are normal people and do not drink other people's blood.I recommend this book to everyone who is more than eleven years old, because people have to understand that Jews are normal people and we have to save them. This is what actually would have happened to Jews if the soldiers would of found them and if we did not help them.I think this was a really good book, because it teaches us about Jewish people. Before I read this book I did not know that it would be this interesting. I really liked this one.--------------------------------------------------------------------My opinion of the book Twenty and Ten is excellent. I think it is a great novel for the class to read. This book shows us what caring and bravery stand for! When I read Twenty and Ten I felt like I was there with the characters. I think if you read this you will fall in love with the characters.Twenty and Ten is set in World War II, in France. The story gives us a taste of what it was like in World War II! In the story we meet some characters, who will stay with us the whole way through. These characters in Twenty and Ten are just normal Christian children, living life peacefully in the countryside. When suddenly, a young man comes with ten Jewish children! Will you take them? Will you be brave and hid ten Jewish children? One of the weakness in the book that the author showed us was being scared. Being scared is normal but this wasn't normal. I liked how the author showed us, not told us the characters were scared. The strength in the book that the author showed us. Was caring! Caring was what got them through the adventure! One of my favorite characters was Henry he is very clever! I liked how he knew that the Nazis were coming! Why did I like the book? That's a quite simple question! I loved this book because it showed me what Jewish children had to suffer in World War II. It also showed me that, “Kindness is key.” It showed that you need to be kind. Whatever you skin or religion you always need to be kind. That’s what I think about Twenty and Ten. It is a book I suggest purchasing! It educational, very well written and lovely for a class novel. You probably will read it again. That's how good this book can get. And that’s what I think about Twenty and Ten.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------Twenty and Ten will prove an excellent book to readers of all genders and ages. It is the exciting story of how twenty Christian children at a school in the countryside of France decide to take in and hide ten Jewish children from the Nazis soldiers. What will they do if Nazis come? How will they hide the Jewish children?Twenty and Ten is an exciting book full of suspense and action. It starts out with twenty Christian children in the countryside of France. Earlier, (Before the story started) the kids were sent away from their homes in the city because there was bombing in the city from World War 2. One day at the school, a young man comes with a request. He wants them and their teacher, Sister Gabriel, to take in and hide ten Jewish kids who are being chased by the Nazis. They must never betray the Jewish kids if the Nazis come to the school. Most of the characters have both good and bad qualities. It describes life in World War II just as I would imagine it. Even though it was based on a real story and is not completely real, it seems very real to me. Therefore, Twenty and Ten was a very believable book. The book definitely has enough detail, as I can picture everything in my head perfectly. It has a great plot line that makes sense. When I read it I didn’t get confused at all.I recommend this book to readers of all genders and ages who are interested in history. It reminds me of Little House in the Big Woods, because they’re both about survival. In Little House in the Big Woods, they often get low on supplies, and have to live on very little. The same goes for Twenty and Ten, because they live on the countryside and they get very little food. During World War 2, supplies and food were very hard to get. They get even less when they have to share with ten Jewish kids. This book is also a lot like real life. They describe life in World War II just as I would imagine it.In my opinion, Twenty and Ten is a great book because of how exciting and believable it is. Most of the characters have both good and bad qualities, which makes them seem like real people. Anyone who likes history should love this book, and even if you don’t, you should like it to.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------This is a great book called Twenty and Ten. I am reviewing this book, because this is one of my favorite books. I was reading this book, because the plot is very interesting and fantastic. When I was reading this book my first thoughts were this book is so boring. When I finished this book I thought this book is great! The very important thing is the theme in this book. The theme is friendship. It is friendship, because they are twenty Christian kids hiding ten Jewish kids. They are hiding them, because Hitler said that Jewish people are not people. So they were killing all the Jewish kids in the world. One day soldiers were coming which were Nazis. Read to find out how are they hiding them and what did the soldiers do to the little kids, also do the Jewish kids survive? This book was very good. It has really realistic things, because it is based on a true story that happened. For example people were saving Jewish kids. (That happened in World War II). There are a lot of round characters for example: Old Soldier, and Henry. I like all the characters. The plot is very interesting. I like the plot, because it was very fun to read. This book is very suspenseful. I always wondered what is going to happen next! Also there are a lot of interesting details to understand everything is going on! It is very good book if it has good details. But the weakness is that is very small book. Another thing that the story is pretty good. I would be recommend to everybody who likes books. I recommend this book, because it will make your thinking about war change that war is the worst thing in the entire world. When I was reading this book it reminded me of Number Of Stars book. It reminded me of Number Of Stars, because of the Jewish people dying and World War II. Finally, I like this book, because it had all the things that I like. For example: short, fun to read, and war. The plot was very good written. It does not have a lot of weaknesses. I would recommend to everybody who likes books.---------------------------------------------------------------

The age and experience of the reader.
I think this would be a good book for a child who knew about the Holocaust. I bought it for an 8 year old grandchild ,and her mother didn't think it was appropriate because she wouldn't know the history. It also supposes that children would understand some references to the New Testament. That isn't so common nowadays.

Beautiful little story.
A good story to introduce young readers to the Holocaust, as this one has a happy ending.

Great intro to WWII.
What a great book! As a teacher I am always on the lookout for books that are challenging but not overwhelming to the reader. This book is set during WWII , at a school in the country in France. Students had been sent there to live as a place safer than the cities. One day They are asked to keep Jewish children there to.This book does a wonderful job of showing aspects of the war children may not have thought of- food shortage, children hiding from Nazis, separation from parents. The book itself is not very lengthy, and easily adaptable for small groups or classrooms.

Amazing story of courage of children
This book is amazing. The children were so brave. They were terrified of the Nazi soldiers, but they protected the Jewish children. Children sacrificed their food ration and took risks to ensure that the Jewish children will have food and water. The author made some great analogy of the Jewish being hunted just as King Herod hunted Jesus, Mary and Joseph.

Wondeful story of Nazi ocupied France from a childs perspective.
This story of children during the world war two era really brings home the dangers and struggles of "normal" people in the Nazi Era. The children in the story range in age from 6-11 so the reader can understand their feelings and decisions. A very short read the story moves quick and there is plenty of action with only implied violence.Originally made for a class to read through in a week there is five med to long chapters with a good breaking point for parent/teacher conversation after each one. There are many Catholic/Christian references in the childrens games which is not surprising considering the era and that they are cared for by a Nun. References easily understood if you know/lookup basic bible stories. Less than 100 pages. Perfect for 7-11 year olds.

Awful Kindle Product
I ordered the kindle version of this book and was unable to return it despite horrible compatibility issues. Some of the text is randomly bolded and strung together. I'm not sure why this is, but this is the second "older" book we've gotten on kindle that has had issues similar to this.

I like this book because it leaves you hanging on whether ...
Twenty and Ten is a book during the war with the Nazis and the Jewish. It starts when 10 Jewish children are secretly brought to a boarding school. One day, two Nazi soldiers come looking for the Jewish children that escaped. It's up to the older children to hide the Jewish children, to save the childrens lives, and theirs. I like this book because it leaves you hanging on whether or not the soldiers will find the children. I think it's a good book for children eight yrs. and older.
