The Huron Carol Hardcover – Picture Book, October 1, 2013

Canadian Christmas hymn (Canada's oldest Christmas song), written probably in 1642 by Jean de Brébeuf, a Jesuit missionary at Sainte-Marie among the Hurons in Canada. Brébeuf wrote the lyrics in the native language of the Huron/Wendat people; the song's original Huron title is "Jesous Ahatonhia" ("Jesus, he is born"). This edition shows not only text (in English) and score, but illustarations very related to the text. My most favorite is text AND pictures: The chiefs from far before him knelt With gifts of fox and beaver pelt.

This book is gorgeous. I bought it as a Christmas gift for my new granddaughter, and I sang it to her as often as I could. Unfortunately, it arrived shortly before Christmas and it was badly damaged in one corner due to insufficient packaging. There was no time to return it, so we just enjoyed it as is. A beautiful addition to a child’s collection of Christmas books.

I bought this book to show my children's choir, which was performing the song and didn't understand the words. It helped with their understanding of the text and made it interesting for them. They loved seeing the pictures, and many parents commented on how their kids told them how they loved the book. This is an absolutely gorgeous book!

I found the music to this carol many years ago and enjoyed it, so I was delighted to find it in book form with such beautiful illustrations.

The song and the story behind it is one of my favorites. I have taught it to my grandchildren. This weekend my 8-yr-old granddaughter is going to sing it in church! And by the way the book arrived in great condition!
