The author's technique of expressing the main character's private thoughts ...
The author's technique of expressing the main character's private thoughts in letters to her absent sister works very well again. Dido's personality is consistent, but her understanding of herself and the wider world is increasing. The revelation of the villain is reserved until the very end with few and subtle clues throughout the plot as to the identity. The romance between Dido and Mr. Lomax reaches another critical point. The ongoing discussion of the role and often plight of females during this period of history continues to be woven into the mystery.

Another great Dido Kent novel
I love Dido Kent. She's a spirited woman ahead of her time. I couldn't wait for this book to come out and finished reading it within a day or so. This story has everything that you could want in a mystery - missing young ladies, old mansion with disused rooms and secret stairwells, and plenty of suspense old and new. I can't wait for the next installment to read more about Dido and Lomax.

Interesting
Excellent writing style ala olde England. Insightful delineation of characters and their pursuits, honor and desires. It is complete with priest's hole and secret passages and machinations of marriages over daughters by fathers and crimes that can arise from such.

Goes from strength to strength
I really like these books, and find that each one is an improvement on the previous one, although they are laid out in a somewhat formulaic fashion as letters to sister Eliza. The latest is really interesting for the discussions of societal norms and the treatment of the spinster class of poor relations of the wealthier segments of society..................

Best of the Series
A very satisfying mystery and partial resolution to Dido and William Lomax's long courtship. I can find no evidence that Ms Dean is currently working on another Dido Kent mystery. I hope that is not the case and that this wonderful series has not come to an end.

Best so far
I was not particularly a fan of this series based on the first books. I only read this because I had nothing else around to read. Glad I did, this moved along abit faster than the others and I have to say I I am now looking forward to the next in the series.

How fun to enter the life of a witty woman of the past
I love Miss Kent's civilized but slightly acidic commentary on her generation. Yet she has a very kind heart and is motivated by charity into her investigations. This series brings a wonderful viewpoint on the roles of men and women in an earlier time (some of which apply to us still). And it is well written. Thank you Anna Dean!

Delightful new Dido Kent Book
I have read all of the books in this series and this is another fine edition. Loved the story and the character development of Miss Kent, and various family members as well as her gentleman friend. Beautifully crafted story, rich with period detail. Excellent!
