A true and honest approach to the translation of The Qur'an
Sam Gerrans has accomplished a monumental feat with his translation of The Qur'an. He uses a methodical and consistent method to translate terms in the Qur'an. Coming from a Muslim background, I got interested in The Qur'an a decade ago. Not being a native Arab speaker, I read Abdullah Yusuf Ali's translation and even through his murky translation, the unparalleled wisdom of The Qur'an shone brightly. I then undertook my own study of the Arabic language going through occurrences of key words in The Qur'an and realized that there were many errors in Mr. Ali's work. The next translation I encountered was by Muhammad Asad. Mr. Asad's translation was a step forward in deciphering core concepts inherent in this great book. However, Mr. Asad's translation left much to be desired. This is due to the fact that both translators were relying on an outside source; Hadith; which are alleged compilations of Prophet Muhammad's sayings and doings in translating the Qur'an. Naturally, I was distrustful of these translation as the Qur'an claims to be detailed (7:52), clear (2:99) and free from contradictions (4:82).Continuing my research, I stumbled upon the work of Sam Gerrans. It is a great travesty that Muslims who claim to follow the Qur'an have not considered it with the care and attention due to it. Mr. Gerrans is to be commended for his diligent work in revealing the true beauty of The Qur'an. He has gone through every instance of terms in The Qur'an to arrive at consistent and true meanings which fit across all contexts in The Qur'an. For example, the world Al-Rahman which occurs in The Qur'an is usually translated as The Most Gracious. However, if a careful study is done across The Qur'an, we will find that Al-Rahman actually means The Almighty. Mr. Gerrans has correctly translated this word due to his methodology. His insights are based on facts and not conjecture. This true and honest approach will go a long way in answering the detractors of The Qur'an who maintain that this book is not revealed by God. Mr. Gerrans backs up his translation by investigating the core meanings of words using lexicons, pan-textual and detailed analysis. I found his view points on certain core concepts to be very enlightening. His knowledge of the Bible also brings a fresh perspective as The Qur'an corrects many factually wrong issues in the narrations of earlier prophets alluded to in the Bible. Furthermore, his thesis that Muhammad lived in Petra and not Mecca confirmed my independent research. Mr. Gerrans is not afraid to speak his mind and question the agreed upon narrative. A true sign of intellectual honesty. If you are on a diligent search for the truth, I sincerely exhort you to buy this book and study it. It will change your life. It has changed mine. I have no doubt that this monumental work will be recognized for its importance in a short amount of time. A must read if you are curious about this final revelation from God to man. May God guide you on your journey.

Outstanding Translation
Outstanding translation with detailed notes to help guide the reader the reader through any misunderstandings from traditional Islamic translations. In the appendix section, the writer provides sufficient evidence for the claims that he makes against the traditional Islamic faith. I'd recommend this translation to anyone that has preconceived notions about what Islam is and are willing to consider facts. I hope that more people pick up this book and that it's translated in to different languages. Peace.

Readers Beware - Gerrans does not believe in Hadith literature, Seerah or Sunnah
I converted to Islam 28 years ago and have read dozens of translations of the Qur'an. While visiting a group of Muslims in prison, I was told about this Sam Gerrans Quran and some strangeness in the commentary. I took the copy home and read through it. The general translation of the Quran into English is fair but the explanations/tafsir are totally inaccurate. The appendix and other commentary, which constitute 1/2 of the book, COMPLETELY fails to take into account the rich history of the sunnah, seerah and hadith. As a result Gerrans discredits the 5 pillars, the shahada, the 5 times a day pray, fasting 30 days during the month of Ramadan, hadith literature, sunnah, and so much more. In his personal opinion, if the Quran does not say it directly then it is not part of Islam. His personal views and translation fails to take into account the very rich history of Islamic scholarly study. On page 843 he states that "Mohammad may have been from Petra and the Masjid al haram is most likely located in Jordan." On page 845 he states that "hadith is hearsay" and is not based on any sound scholarship and on page 844 the he states, "the concepts of sharia are found nowhere in the Quran." This book is full of erroneous information which contradictions mainstream Islam. Gerrans fails to understand and note the hundreds of years of information gained from scholarly consensus and his views are often absurd. This book is a fraudulent and confusing copy/product and I would not recommend it to anyone.

A must have!
This translation is pure from a methadology standpoint and it's author comes from a non Islamic background without the attached conformation bias and pressure from peers to conform to the traditions of mullahs who have clearly deviated from Quranic doctrine. Peace

Eye opener
I was tired of reading the same old interpretations of The Quran using hypothetical strings related to hear say .Sam’s approach to Quran using it’s own content to explain itself is worth a read and sure to help understand how simple and practical The Quran is.
