Great lens
So far, I really love this lens. It can't nail the detail of my manual 50mm f/1.8, nor is it fast enough to freeze motion, but it's a great zoom lens to just carry around. A lot of pictures don't need the kind of detail I get with the prime lens, and it's really nice to be able to pick a focal length, compose, and shoot--knowing that the auto-focus and VR are going to capture exactly what I want most of the time. The manual focus ring sucks, it just slides around, no dampening at all apparently. If you need to capture something fast, use the autofocus. The manual ring will do if the auto's just a little off, but it seems to work really well. Two switches--VR on/off and M/A for focus mode. Zoom ring is comfortable, focus ring sucks. This is a G lens--no aperture ring. Image quality is great, no complaints here. As I said, it doesn't quite match the sharpness of my 50mm prime, but of course, I wouldn't expect it to. It's excellent for its purpose, and I'm very happy with the quality. Focuses at around 5.5" I got a little closer than that on manual at the wide end if I remember right. The depth of field was about half an inch around that point, but it's not a steep drop off (so, no really great subject separation) Still good, though. Didn't notice any ghosting or flare described earlier, but I don't do highly contrasted scenes with bright lighting, like city nightscapes. Or at least, I don't use a zoom for it. VR works well. I didn't have any problem getting sharp images at this speed anyway, but it definitely helps with natural lighting. Little heavy on the D40, tips the balance to the lens a bit. Not enough to need the grip, but I bet the old ED II (which is still the kit lens with the D40) was a little more balanced. When I can get the VR version for a Franklin (flawless refurbished from Cameta, 90 day warranty), though, I can't argue. Really happy with it, definitely grab one if Cameta has a refurb. It's well worth the retail price, as well.

Fantastic light weight lens
This is a great story lens. It is extremely light-weight and incredible sharp. I find myself rarely using filters, as this lens does not really need much improvement. I see no chromatic aberration with this lens, and no vignetting that I can see. The VR mode is great for hand held, and easily turns off for tripod shooting. The only time I put this lens in auto-focus is if I am handing my camera to someone else. This focus ring on this lens is easy to use, and I see no drift from the focal length ring. All-in-all, this is a must own lens, not just for the money. I also have a 27mm Nikkor prime lens, and find this lens to even be a better portrait lens. My next purchase will probably be the Nikkor 55 to 300mm lens for a matching set! With this lens, I have taken a picture of a bumble-bee in flight, and it's wings look as though they are sitting still. A truly sharp, fast lens. My only complaint about this lens, it is a bit too light. That's crazy sounding even from my own mouth; but I have a feeling that it's a plastic-body lens that will break if I look at it funny. Attached to a magnesium D200, it feels like an emergency spare tire on a Ferrari. With my heavy camera, it does feel more balanced than lets say a Sigma 300mm f4; but at the cost of how much durability? I guess light weight is a two way street.

Nice Little Bundle, Great Camera
This is my first SLR since my old Minolta XG-7. Ok, I'm dating myself, but I'm such a cheap date...lol. The unit was easy to understand, set up and start using. It is a bit trying on the patience to have to wait for the the battery to charge for an hour and half because I like to get my hands in right away with the thrill of having something new. From just shooting pictures in my back yard, the quality is incredible. I love the auto focus feature. SLR cameras have come a long way in 30 years. The onboard editing and filtering features are nice and work well. I've ordered the zoom lense for this camera and can't wait for it to come since I love to shoot landscapes and wildlife. Living in Virginia there is so much beauty to shoot. Plus there is a family of deer that come wandering out into a field next to my back yard and I've been wanting to take some really cool pictures of them without scaring them away. I can't wait for my friend's reactions when they see some of my new pictures pop up in my digital frame. I'm so happy to be back into SLR-land again. I remember all kinds of cool times with my old camera and I can't wait to make some new memories with this one. My old point and shoot digital was ok but this by far takes the most incredible images I've ever seen. The pictures look like ones out of a magazine.

For the price, this is an excellent piece of kit. Pretty good optically although there is some distortion at both ends of the zoom. The manual focus is also VERY sensitive and quite difficult to get spot on. Autofocus is quick and accurate. Reasonably small and light and takes 52mm filters. Remember this is a superceded model and lacks some of the bells and whistles of the current version, hence the lower price. Nonetheless it is still a very competent lens.

Gives me a wide angle option I've never had before as well as the focal length of a standard lens. I have been more "focused" over the years on telephoto and/or macro shots. Now I have the ability to attempt some other styles. Lens is well made and great optics. I was thinking I was going to be getting one of the cheap plastic kit lenses but this one is typical solid Nikon construction and works great

I bought my Nikon d5200 as a body only camera and then added this lens figuring that it would be better than the standard kit lens. Don't know if it is or not, all I can say is that as a "walk about" lens it is pretty good. It is light weight, fast focusing and the shots taken with it are very sharp. I know that there are better lenses out there but having just bought a new d5200, I had to watch the pennies. Value for money, this little lens is very good and I would recommend it.
