Short and sturdy
I've been sleeping on this every night for 18 months so I decided it was time for a review. I use the middle position, a little higher than 45 degrees, to ease my sleep apnea and ward off acid reflux, with my hips against the bottom of the frame to minimize back curvature. First, the good point, it is very sturdy and so far the cloth has held up with no visible wear. I'm over 300 lbs so that's saying something. They say it weighs 7.4 lbs and that feels about right, which to me is nothing. I fold it flat and put it in a garbage bag to keep it clean and just toss it in the back seat when I travel, and take it into hotels as needed. Now the big bad point. The back is only about 16" tall so if you are over about 5' tall and slide your hips up against the bottom of the back rest, the bottom of your head will be higher than the top cross bar so you can't lean your head back with a pillow (not ever their dinky slab). I'm 5' 9" so that was a big problem, but luckily there's a machine shop at work so I extended the bottom of the back rest frame on each side by 7" and proved I could sew by adding a cross piece of old blue jean leg material so now the back is 23" from the pivot point to the top of the cross bar and I can sleep with a pillow. As upright as I sleep my head falls to the side with a plain flat pillow which is very uncomfortable so I use a neck pillow instead. That supports the sides of my neck and the back of the pillow is flat where it contacts the back rest so it keep my head nicely vertical. Last, they supply an "apron" piece with two tiny velcro tabs that you attach to the lower front cross bar and then sit on to keep the back rest from sliding away when it is not against a wall or head board. I think my infant niece would have torn them off with no problem, I didn't even feel them ripping loose the first time I leaned back. No problem, I expected that, the apron is plenty long so just double it over the cross bar and then sit on it. Their apron is some kind of rubberized canvas which made me sweat some, so I switched to a bath towel but their piece does work so I'm not docking for that. I keep the back rest away from the wall so I don't scrape my paneling up, so the apron is mandatory to keep the back rest in position. I sleep alone in a double bed and over the months gradually move from side to side and to a diagonal sometimes, to spread out any wear on the sheets and mattress, and so far I have not noticed any marks or tears from the back rest digging in. In the winter my back got cold so I folded a full size sheet lengthwise so it was about the same width as the backrest, and looped it around the backrest, up, down, up again, and then the end hangs down loosely about half way. That gave six tight layers of sheet, which was softer and more comfortable year round and just one more sheet to wash so no big deal. At the time of purchase this was the tallest back rest I could find on amazon, but now there is one in a nice plaid that is cheaper and looks like it is about as tall as mine after my extension. No idea of the quality but I will give it a try if this one ever breaks: ObboMed SM-5200 Adjustable Backrest with Headrest .Summary: as received it did not work for me because it was much too short, but after some mods and a new pillow it has been holding up for 18 months of every night use. If you just want to support your head or head and shoulders, or are shorter than about 5', then this will work for you.

Not as sturdy as I thought. Really slides allot
The head rest is too floppy has only one position. The rail on the bottom with the different cutouts she have one closer to the rest so you can sit up straight in bed, which is what I wanted. Also the canvas made a mark on my Hubbys back right down the center, have no idea why, but it was really red. Will use it sparingly.

Exceeds my expectations...
I thought it would be very uncomfortable to sleep with this backrest but it has been a dream. You can use it with a pillow or pillows or without. It also has 5 different positions to help with comfort. I loved it so much that I bought for the rest of my family and have told so many others about this backrest. I bought it for myself because I have severe acid re flux and thought I could never ever sleep with this backrest or even in that position but I'm actually sleeping much better than I ever did. Thank you for a great nights sleep.
