Even happier I didn't return. The more I use, the more I love.
03-04-2014 I just completed the latest firmware upgrade and tried the dlink+ app again. I can't say if the firware update did the trick or all the new features that seem to have been added to the dlink+ app but what I can say is that this camera and the paid dlink+ app are now working great together on my kindle fire HD. There may be some other issues from my original review that haven't been fixed but I could not be happier with this camera now. Enough so that I'm now ready to decide on an indoor/outdoor, ptz, and two-way camera. I'm pretty sure it will be another DLink now 10-12-2013 update: Since I was busy and didn't return this camera, I finally got back to seeing if I could do anything with .avi video files. There were a lot of software packages that claimed they could help me but I didn't want to pay half of what I paid for the camera to find out. Since I could play some .avi files, I didn't know if the problem was in my media players, plug-ins, etc. or with the camera. I found a free player at downloadster.org and chanced the download since I had just backed up my PC. The great news is I'm no longer watching totally black videos so I've changed my rating from 3 stars to 4. I like the camera better now, especially since I wasn't expecting videos, but there are still issues as stated below in my original review and a couple of other things that I'm on the fence on as to whether they are issues or not. original review: The Good: I'm happy with the picture and that it can be set up to send images on motion detection. The pan is nice and you can rotate it basically 360 degrees. You can set a home position and send the camera back home with one click. You can also set the distance/angle of your pan steps. The night vision works nice and you really can see details pretty far away with it. The Bad: DCS-5010L problems Issue 1-Wireless Setup: When setting up the camera, it would not find my wireless network. Once the camera was setup, I was able to log into it via it's IP address and go to "Wireless Setup" on the left side of the screen after selecting the "setup" tab at the top of the screen. I was able to type in my SSID here. Since I tried the install multiple times, I found I could also use "Site survey" on this screen and it would find my wireless network. This worked and I could unplug my ethernet cable and use the camera wirelessly. I could also unplug the camera and move it to different locations in the house. If you unplug your camera, you'll need to go back in to setup and set the correct time. Issue 1 fix problem: The problem with getting the camera to work wireless using the fix that I used is that if you log into your camera via the mydlink software and go to the settings you will see the "Connect this camera wirelessly" option. There is a down arrow that opens up a wireless network input rectangle that has a down arrow showing the wireless network(s) available to choose from. However, I never have any to choose from so this and the associated password input are always blank. This becomes a problem if I want to use the mydlink page to change settings. I have lost my wireless ability after changing between enabling and disabling the "send email notification" feature on this page. I had to get the ethernet cable back out and input my wireless network as described in Issue 1. above. Note: I'm assuming they are blank because of the way I got it to recognize my wireless network and that it is not blank for everyone. Issue 2-Dlink+ App: Before purchasing this camera, I had purchased a Dlink DCS-930L that I was using the DLINK lite free app to watch when I was away from home. I could not view this DCS-5010L on my Dlink lite but since it was the second camera and I believe lite is only for one camera I figured I needed to buy the DLINK+ app. I tried to find what cameras the + supported on the Amazon product page but could not. Silly me went to the google play store and found that the + supported the 5010L. So I bought the + and didn't try it until after my 15 minutes were up to return it and then I found out that Dlink+ that I had bought from Amazon would just display the question mark for this camera indicating that it was not supported. Issue 3-video clip in .avi format: Even if this camera didn't work with the DLink+ app, I figured the video clip feature might make up for it. The problem is that the video clips that are being emailed to me just show a black screen as they play. The clips do pickup the audio and play it back but why would I want just the audio. I checked my media player and I have other avi files that play just fine. I've been changing the setting such as bit rate, etc. for the camera and trying to play the files but so far I'm still getting a solid black picture with audio. The still images from this camera are fine so the camera takes pictures. At one time when I was trying to play one of the files I got a message that said the file had an avi extention but was the wrong format. I'm willing to do a little more testing but at this point I'm seeing more stuff that I can't do with this camera than stuff that I can and am thinking I should return it. I think I should have just gotten another 930L or tried another brand. My Setup: For anyone wondering what type of setup I'm using this with, I used a Vista desktop and a DLink DIR-655 wireless router to do the setup. I used the DLink lite and the DLink+ applications on a Kindle Fire HD. Oh, and I'm in the country in the middle of 95 acres so there aren't any other wireless network creating problems. At this point, I don't consider this camera worth the money and will probably return it. However, as an engineer I can't say I'm not enjoying the challenges it is giving me so I've got a few more things to try and then I will update this post as to whether I returned the camera or found work arounds that I could live with.

The camera works fine. Great price for what is advertise
People your expectations are way to high for this camera. If price wasn't an option, you would of spent thousands of dollars for a top notch security system. Does this camera record in HD quality? NO! So what! We all at some point have owned a VHS or DVD before and the picture looks fine. Man aren't we all a bit spoiler by the luxuries in life. DO NOT BELIEVE THE NEGATIVE REVIEWS!!!!!!!!! THIS CAMERA WORKS GREAT FOR ITS PURPOSE!!!!!! I've owned this camera for over a week and I have this bad boy overlooking my back porch right now. I have been looking to add a wireless camera surveillance system for a while without having to shell out thousands of dollars. I own 3 DLink cameras without any issues and the setup was easy. (Note: I currently have 40mbps down with my internet provider so my experience may be a bit different than others.) I just needed to contact support to help me to set up the email settings when I had motion detection enabled. I had no issues what so ever contacting support unlike others. Although these cameras is supposed to be indoors I have two of them outside mounted but under shade. The motion detection can be a bit sensitive so you are going to have to play with it for a while to find the right setting. I currently have mine setup to send me an emAil every time motion is detected. I also have it setup to send me a picture and video when motion is detected. I have a yahoo email that I never use so I have the emails being sent there. As far as the app goes Dlight, I have an android phone and an ipad. The app is free on mobile devices and 99 cents for the ipad. They both have the same functionality for except that the ipad you can view multiple cameras onto the screen. So when I'm on the road I can check on the family with my phone and when I'm in the house I have my ipad open up displaying all 3 cameras!!!! This by far is the best cost effective way for video surveillance!!!! Pros: Cost effective. Average camera will run you at least $150!!!! Cameras with ADT will probably cost more than that Send video and images to any email Can setup a schedule of when you want motion detection. Wireless. Easy setup. No networking skills needed. Follow instructions. Don't need a Dlink router to work Picture quality is decent. No HD but you pay for what you get. I'd say it's about VHS quality Has a decent range to detect motion. Roughly 15 ft The app works great on both tablet and droid. I can view remotely on either wifi or 4g signal Cons Video length of image taken. About 7-11 seconds Dlink website needs either google chrome or Firefox to work. Constant emails with false motion detections can get annoying after a while but you get use to it. Now a days we are always glued to our phones anyway :-) The camera tends to disconnects a couple of times during the day. Believe it or not this is not a big deal. The camera doesn't shut down and restart. It just loses connectivity to your wireless router for a second. Keep in mind if you have any interference in your house this can happen often. Microwave, house phones etc.The only reason you will know this happens is because you will receive an email. It happens so fast you won't even realize it. It's not an issue with the camera itself. This is usually normal with any other electronic device. Pcs, tablets, xbox, etc. Overall 8.5/10 Keep up the good work DLink!!!!!

Works just as expected - easy set-up.
I ordered four models: DCS-930L, DCS-932L, DCS-2132L and DCS-5010L. All but the DCS-5010L were either difficult to connect and/or would not remain connected and so were returned. The 5020L set up went smoothly and it has continued to work reliably for the past 7 months, with no additional cost other than internet service. It even started right back up after a winter storm power outage. I love the pan&tilt and auto return that allows for a sweeping view of an entire room and beyond. The night vision works very well in total darkness as does the snapshot feature, though the picture resolution is rather low. I mainly use the android app and it works better - logging in is faster and the sound and picture transmission are smoother - than the using a computer, Sometimes transmission stutters or drops out, and sometimes the pan & tilt have quite a lag. I have not used the motion detection feature. Sound is usually very good, I can hear conversations in the same room clearly, as well as outside sounds and sounds from other rooms in the house. I would definitely recommend this camera for general home surveillance, checking in on pets, children, elderly parents, etc. as long as you are aware of and OK with the limitations.

Edit (9/5/14) I now give this camera 5/5 stars!
Okay, in terms of hardware quality I am satisfied and impressed. It looks nice, the pan and tilt motor is VERY smooth, quiet, and fast. The camera has a fantastic video quality that is as good as I'd hope for being standard definition. I also like the microphone, I can hear conversations that are happening in the next room. It links up with WiFi reliably, and never forgets the password or WiFi router after unplugged and moved to different locations. I knocked off 2 stars (honestly, I should knock off 3 stars but I'm nice) because the software sucks. The app is glitchy. It times out too fast. The sound works only some times. If you pan/tilt the camera too many times in one viewing session it freezes up. And it is NOWHERE near 30fps. I have fast internet, and the best I ever get is 1fps. This really ruins the experience. There are workarounds. If you manually close out the d-link app on the iphone and reboot it, the sound will once again work. But only for a few minutes. So you are manually reloading the app just to hear the audio. The programmers have really ruined a nice camera that works so good and without the need for port forwarding. I really should only give this 2 stars... but as I said, I'm nice. EDIT: 9/5/14 So there have been updates to the app. I have to say, they must have read my review because each one of those issues is completely fixed. It works flawlessly, and no more worrying if I'm switching in and out of different cameras too quickly, or doing something wrong to cause a glitch. It turns out it was all in the app, not the software on the camera itself because I have done no firmware updates. Therefore, I now give this camera 5 out of 5 stars! I highly recommend this camera now!

Nice Pan & Tilt for the price... once you get it set up.
So off the bat, I am going to say that this is a good camera, not a great camera, but good... and the remote pan & tilt is great... The picture in color is so-so, and night vision is clear so long as you don't zoom in, which gets pixelated. And be sure to adjust the focus with the bevel on the front of the camera and you will have a good picture... BUT... The set-up is a nightmare. I am usually very good with these things, and it took an hour on the phone with tech support to get it to work, and even then, they stopped trying when they thought it was a router problem. My WPS wasn't connecting, I couldn't get it to communicate even when I chose my network, and on top of it all, I couldn't remember the password to my router. Tech support walked me through forwarding the camera's port (I have done general port-forwarding before, but this was a little trickier since it had to be done through the camera's ip page) and then they wanted to change the settings on my router, but I couldn't remember the password, so they just told me what to do once I got into my router settings. Turns out I reset my router (and set the wireless up with the same name and password so I wouldn't have to reset all my devices) and the camera linked prefectly. Forwarding the camera from .20 to .140 was the key. If I had any advice for people buying this camera, it would be to print the manual out before you try to install... it doesn't come with the camera, but is very helpful. All in all, this camera is a good value and does what it is supposed to, and I think now that I have gotten this one set up, I could add others with ease. Tech Support overall WAS very helpful, and I have to give them a lot of credit for their patience, since they can't see what's going on on your screen! So print the manual out and CALL tech support... don't try to be a hero. They are patient and helpful!

Motion Detection Not Working, Lack of Customer Service.
This camera is not compatible with D-ViewCam software, although the manual informs that it is compatible. This camera is not listed under D-ViewCam software camera list so I could not even manually add this, when D-ViewCam failed to detect this. It is important for me to use D-ViewCam because I need to manage multiple cameras. D-Link email support does not exist. They never reply back. They do not answer the phone and they do not return calls, even after I leave voice mails. I hope that they understand the importance of assisting post sales inquiry to minimize unnecessary returns. I hope the D-Link rep who is posting reply to the review in Amazon forward this issue to management. I am returning this. Update: The D-ViewCam became available for this camera a few days ago. D-Link should have made it available when they released this product or at least answer the phone to inform late addition. I am still not going back to this product because motion detection was not working for me, either. I used it to get email notification when we are away and someone enters our house. However, this camera considers light change as a motion. I changed the settings-sensitivity down to 1%, image with less contrast, simpler detection area... Nothing works. I did not want to play all my recording all the time to check. If you want to get motion detection notification by email and do not want any misfired notification, PIR camera is better than this, although it is still not perfect.

Does What I Needed
Setup on a home network was pretty easy. Initially, I didn't use the setup wizard or software that came with it and had no problems getting the camera setup. However, when it came time to setup a free DynDNS account (Dlink calls it something else with their brand but it's really just a DynDNS account), the only way to do it was via that setup wizard and I had to repeat all the steps again, via the wizard, to setup the camera just to get to the end where it offers the option to create an account. Dorking around with the firewall settings and a DynamicDNS account in order to be able to connect to the camera from work took a couple days of trial and error but it wasn't too bad considering I had never done it before. Don't buy it solely for the motion detection if it is going in a room whose light is changed by the outside ambient light. I setup motion detection and got a false alarm whenever the sun brightness level changed in the room. I turned that off and just leave the live video open in the bottom corner of my monitor. The controls to move the camera are herky jerky. It does allow you to save preset positions (aka save and label what it is currently looking at, selecting that saved position from the list returns the camera to that spot when it was saved) and the movement is pretty fluid when it's traversing to one of those. I also have to give Amazon some kudo's. The original shipment was stolen off my front porch and Amazon sent a replacement without any hassles and even refunded my next day air shipping charges I paid on the original shipment! They were not obligated to do any of that yet they did. Awesome customer service.

Great starter cam!
I have two foscam and after a difficult time configuring them when i changed internet providers i was just ready for a plug and play option. Thank you D-link, for the easy set up process. Just plug it in and if you use the (cloud) option it is fast and easy. As for the picture quality it is fine. Not as good as the foscam FI8910W but it works just fine for me. I have one facing the front door looking out the window and another in the house. The night vision is fine for me as well about 25 ft. OVER 4G- The streaming live feed it could be better, little choppy, picture is fine on a Samsung GS3, the sound is ok, but it maybe due to the network speed. Controlling the camera is a bit slow, when you tell it to turn or change from night vision to day it is slow reacting. On the plus side. When i access the cameras over internet it is not as choppy and the sound is better. If some one knows of a better app then the (Dlink lite) please let me know. The Dlink lite app is fine but could use better features. Does anyone know how to set the motion to send me a picture or if that is possible and not just a notification to check the camera. Over all i am very happy.

great camera. pan, tilt, night vision, sound.
Update. I have had this thing for several years and it still works great, the motor has held up and it has been powered on for close to 3 years. I would buy several of these things. I have been using this thing for quite some time now and have not had a single issue. The pan and tilt is an amazing feature and this almost does a full 360. It was mostly used to check on the dog while I am at work but I have tested the night vision and sound monitoring and they both work great as well. I have the app on both of my phones which allow me to control the camera and monitor it remotely and on the go. My biggest complaint would be the recording features and D-link software. It would be nice if companies included some software you can add 3 or 4 cameras too and record on motion for security purposes. I eventually just went with ISPY and it is working great. The picture is what you would expect from this price point. It's good. but I wasn't expecting crystal clear at sub $100. Overall I am happy I bought this. The one concern I had was the pan/tilt motors and they have held out great.

Bit Disappointed
I got this a few days ago and for the most part it works, my biggest beef is that a lot of it relies on Java which i hate. The interface is ok again i blame java for that. The one other thing and maybe d-link can improve on this is the controls for pan and tild. Instead of moving the cursor over to enlarge the arrows maybe just make it larger so their always their.. This is for indoor use only, was going to use it in the garage but it gets too cold for it. That's was my fault for not doing more reading on the product... One thing i would like to see if D-Link can do it is temporary mute the mic while the camera is panning or tilting because the mic picks up the motor very loudly. Once it has stopped its fine.. Networking wasn't that hard to do with it.

Great camera
This camera works exactly as specified in the write-up. It was easy to set up with the enclosed instructions. D-Link provides above average customer service if you need it, which I didn't for this camera. D-Link has a really good app for an Android phone called "mydlinkLite" which I use to monitor my apartment from my phone, when I'm away. I would recommend this camera to anyone looking for a reasonably priced wireless camera that can be operated remotely.

Great camera for the money.
Great clarity and easily adjustable. The motion detection works very well (adjustable sensitivity). The night mode works well and is quite clear. Easy to set up with provided instructions. Be sure to use the mobile app for access anywhere (also set notifications when motion is detected).
